IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate how geothermal energy is used to manufacture electricity.
At initially, The cold water is gathered in a big box which is about 4.5km above injection drains. It pumped all water below to the injection wells which send it to geothermal zone also known as (hot rocks).
It make the cold water into hot water after processing from there it goes to production wells which collect all water from hot rocks and delivered it to condenser which is connected with production pipes. In condenser it make steam with hot water and send it to turbine. Turbine make the steam into powdered steam and pass it to generator with a connected pipe. The generator prosses the powdered steam which they get from turbine and produce electricity with it and send to electricity tower which supplies it to grid houses and after that all process the electricity comes to our houses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the geothermal energy process, but it fails to provide a clear overview or highlight the main features effectively. The description is largely a step-by-step narrative that lacks the analytical summary required for an Academic Task 1. Furthermore, the response contains significant inaccuracies regarding the process, such as the claim that the condenser 'makes steam' from hot water, which misrepresents the diagram. The information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the lack of a clear introduction or summary paragraph limits the effectiveness of the report. To improve, focus on identifying the key stages of the cycle and presenting them in a logical, accurate sequence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into two paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often confusing. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'and' to connect long, run-on sentences. Phrases like 'At initially' are grammatically incorrect and do not serve as effective transitions. The paragraphing is also unbalanced, with a very short introductory sentence followed by a dense, single paragraph that covers the entire process. Improving the use of linking words (e.g., 'subsequently', 'following this', 'as a result') and breaking the process into distinct, logical stages would significantly enhance the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and often imprecise. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'manufacture electricity' (instead of 'generate'), 'powdered steam' (which is not a standard term in this context), and 'grid houses' (which is not standard terminology). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe a technical process with precision. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to energy production, such as 'geothermal reservoir', 'thermal energy', 'pressurized', and 'electrical grid'. Expanding your range of verbs and nouns will help you describe the diagram more accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The diagram illustrate', 'It make the cold water'), article usage (e.g., 'in a big box'), and tense consistency. Sentence structures are largely simple or contain errors when attempting complexity, such as the run-on sentences in the second paragraph. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of parentheses and commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and practicing the correct use of articles and prepositions in a technical context.
