IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The schematic diagram illustrates that how geothermal energy is used to be produced with several steps and procedures involvement in the entire process.

Overall, the entire working principle was divided into 5 steps that includes all the processing methods of geothermal energy production from water to electricity. From the section 1 to 4 the cold water is converted into a steam through wells and section 4 to 5 steam was used in the turbines to produce power.

Initially, in the stage 1 cold water was collected and stores in tanker then after it directly pumped downwards to the injection well in the under ground through pumps which are designed of 4.5km long. And the injection well injects cold water to hot rocks where the water get hotter the zone itself called geothermal zone, it will converted into condenser through the production well upwards.

Secondly, in stage 4 hot water is will be formed as steam, produced steam enters to turbine at the stage of 5 the turbine is powered by steam which directly connected to a generator which converts rotary motion into electricity then it comes to final stage to distribute.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy production process, from the injection of cold water to the final distribution of electricity. You have successfully identified the key features, such as the injection well, the geothermal zone, and the turbine/generator system. However, the description is slightly imprecise in places; for example, referring to the 'condenser' as the output of the geothermal zone is technically inaccurate based on the diagram. While the overview is present, it could be more clearly defined to highlight the cyclical nature of the process. Overall, the response addresses the requirements of the task well, though some technical details are slightly muddled.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the process. You use transition signals like 'Initially' and 'Secondly' to guide the reader through the stages. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and there are issues with referencing; for instance, 'the zone itself called geothermal zone' is awkward and lacks clear connection to the previous sentence. Additionally, some sentences are run-on or lack appropriate punctuation, which affects the flow of information. Improving the use of cohesive devices to link ideas more smoothly within and between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'schematic diagram', 'injection well', and 'rotary motion'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'process involvement' instead of 'process involves' and 'stores in tanker' instead of 'stored in a tank'. Some of these errors, while not impeding communication, show a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, you should focus on more accurate collocations and ensure that technical terms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('water get hotter'), incorrect tense usage ('hot water is will be formed'), and missing articles ('in the under ground'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors indicate a lack of control over complex structures. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb tenses and article usage, and ensure that complex sentences are constructed correctly.
