IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The following diagram illustrates the production of electricity by using geothermal energy.

Overall, there are 5 major steps involved in the generation of electricity by using geothermal energy which include cold water, the injection well, the production well, condenser along with generator and turbine.

First of all, cold water is stored in a large container which is then pumped underground up to 4.5 km deep to the injection well. The injection well directs the cold water through the geothermal zone which contains hot rocks after which the hot water is directed towards the production well.

After which the production well pumps up the hot water towards the surface into a condenser where the hot water is turned into steam. The steam produced is used to power the turbine that is connected to the generator. When the turbine rotates, it produces electricity and the generated electricity is stored in the generator. When electricity is needed, it is supplied through the generator to the main lines using wires.
