IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This chart illustrates how the electricity is produced by using geothermal energy. This essay will discuss about the important factors and explain the steps for generating electricity.
Overall, it is clear that the geothermal power plant generates current after passing through five major steps. Once these conditions are satisfied the electricity is then transferred for household usage.
The first stage would be storing the cold water. This water is collected in large tanks for cooling. Once the temperature is cold enough, the water is then pumped down in a large injection well, which is 4.5km long. On the other hand, this water travels through a geothermal zone where there are hot rocks for controlling the temperature.
As a result, this water is released to a production well where it gets pumped up again and it then travels towards the condenser for heat generation. Moreover, this steam is processed through a massive turbine which is powered by the steam. Furthermore, this powered steam vents through a generator which is powered by the turbine. Consequently, the outcome of this generator produces electricity which is then sent for usage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the geothermal energy process. You have clearly outlined the five-stage cycle, from the injection of cold water to the final generation of electricity. The overview is functional, though it could be improved by highlighting the cyclical nature of the process more explicitly. You have accurately described the key components, such as the injection well, production well, and turbine. To reach a higher band, ensure that all technical details are interpreted accurately; for instance, the diagram shows the water being heated by hot rocks, which you described well, but ensure the distinction between steam and water is consistently maintained throughout the description.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific stage of the process. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Once', 'On the other hand', 'As a result', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or are used in contexts where they do not perfectly fit the logical flow, such as 'On the other hand' when describing the path of the water, which is not a contrasting idea. Improving the variety and naturalness of these linking phrases will help the flow of the text feel more sophisticated and less like a list of steps.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using technical terms like 'injection well', 'production well', 'condenser', and 'turbine' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'generates current' (electricity is usually 'generated' or 'produced') and 'powered steam' (steam is the medium, not the power source itself). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations related to industrial processes would elevate the response. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and your sentences are generally easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'discuss about' (the verb 'discuss' does not take a preposition) and 'the electricity is produced' (the definite article is unnecessary here). While you attempt complex sentences, they are sometimes slightly repetitive in structure. Increasing the variety of your sentence patterns and ensuring more precise article usage would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
