IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates how geothermal energy is used to generate electricity in a geothermal power plant.

Overall, there are five main stages in this process, beginning with cold water being pump underground and ending with electricity beings produce a generator. The water is heated by hot rocks before converted into steam to power a turbine.

First of all, cold water is pumped down approximately 4.5 kilometres through an injection well. It passes through the geothermal zone, where there are heat rocks. As the water move through this area it become heated. However, the hot water is subsequently pumped back to the surface through a separate production well.

Once the hot water, reaches the surface, it enters a condenser where it is covered into steam. Then, the steam moves towards a turbine and causes to it in rotate. In the final stage, the rotating turbine powers a generator, which produces electricity. After that, the electricity is then supplied to the power grid respectively.
