IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The provided diagram illustrates the multi step process that how geothermal energy in consumed to generate electricity.
Overall, it is clear that this is a cyclical process consisting of 5 steps beginning with cold water and cultimating in powered by turbine and produces electricity.
As the initial stage of the process cold water pumped down following this, cold water pumped down through the injection well in geothermal zone ( hot rocks). Once this step is completed hot water went to condenser through the production well.
Moving on to the subsequent stages the water in condenser will be steamed through generator and turbine. Subseqeuntly, turbine is powered by steam and then the generator is powered by turbine and then it produces electricity. Finally, the electricity then is ready to fulfil the needs of people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the main features of the geothermal process are identified, the description is somewhat superficial. The summary of the steps is present, but the explanation lacks the necessary detail to fully develop the process description. Because the response is under-length, it cannot be considered a fully developed report, leading to a lower score in this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into a brief introduction and a body paragraph, but the paragraphing is not fully effective. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'then' and 'subsequently'. While there is a logical progression from the injection well to the final electricity production, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing and grammatical errors, which makes the text feel disjointed in places.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'cultimating' instead of 'culminating' and 'Subseqeuntly' instead of 'Subsequently'. The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on basic terms like 'powered by' and 'produces'. To improve, you should incorporate more precise technical terminology related to energy production and ensure accurate spelling of key process-related verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the multi step process that how geothermal energy in consumed' (incorrect clause structure and preposition) and 'cold water pumped down' (missing auxiliary verb). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the control over basic grammar is inconsistent. The frequent omission of articles and errors in verb tense usage (e.g., 'hot water went to condenser') prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
