IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The flow chart below depicts different stages of production of electricity by using geothermal energy source.
Overall, the production contains several steps in order to produce the electricity. Beginning with cold water pumping into ground to hot condensed steam coming out of it to give out the electricity that required.
In the first step, the cold water from storage tank is pumped into ground about 4.5 km depth to reach the injection well. The water then flows into the geothermal zone where the hot rocks are present to ensure the heating of water. In the third step, hot water now reaches the production well form where it is pumped back onto the ground into the condenser.
This is followed by condensing the hot water to produce steam which goes through the turbine in the later step. The turbine then passes the steam to generator in which the electricity is produced and stored. The generator is connected to a tower for the distribution the produced power.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy production process. You have identified the key components such as the injection well, geothermal zone, production well, condenser, turbine, and generator. However, the overview is slightly weak; while it mentions the process contains several steps, it could be more descriptive by highlighting the cyclical nature of the system. Additionally, some details are slightly inaccurate, such as stating the water is pumped 'back onto the ground' into the condenser, whereas the diagram shows it moving through a closed-loop system. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between the stages is described with greater precision and clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, moving step-by-step through the process. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In the first step', 'The water then', and 'This is followed by' to guide the reader. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the response is essentially two blocks of text. A more effective structure would involve a clear introduction, a body paragraph for the initial extraction phase, and a second body paragraph for the power generation phase. Furthermore, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother to improve the overall flow of the explanation.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using technical terms like 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', 'condenser', and 'turbine' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'give out the electricity that required' (should be 'that is required') and 'distribution the produced power' (missing a preposition like 'of'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire to include more precise verbs and nouns related to energy production would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the clarity of your writing. For example, 'production of electricity by using geothermal energy source' lacks necessary articles, and 'pumped back onto the ground into the condenser' is confusingly phrased. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles throughout the text. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for articles and preposition usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
