IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

The diagram illustrates, the layout of to produce electricity by the use of geothermal energy power pant.

Overall it can be seen that, in the given period their are several five step to production of Geothermal power plant. it initiate with cold water and these process will be ended at the Generator Turbine and produce the eleciticty.

To commence, the process are begain with cold water and these cold water deep into the underground land approximately 4.5 Km. However, the second step are making the injection well to Geothermal zone with the help of hot rocks as well as all the conbination of stages were been done in the under the land due to in the land the soil which can improve the curical easily the process anf genrate the eleciticty on it.

on the other hand, Nevertheless, after the second step all the power will be transforeming into the Hot water and the pumped were pull up the all connection into the Condenser. Moreover, in the condenser it was rotate repidely and transform into steam. as a result, the steam were been making the Turbine. Finally, all the end of the process all the power plant were been converted Turbine to Generator and produce electricity and put on the long highted bulding so it can easily transform the electricity to all the home and shops.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to describe the process shown in the diagram, identifying key stages such as cold water being sent underground, the injection well, the condenser, and the turbine generating electricity. However, the explanation of the stages is frequently confusing, inaccurate, and lacks a clear overview. Key features of the cyclical nature of the process are largely missed, and the description suffers from severe misinterpretations of the visual information, such as stating that 'the power will be transforming into the Hot water and the pumped were pull up the all connection into the Condenser.' These deficiencies place the response at Band 4.0, as the information presented is difficult to follow and fails to accurately summarise the main features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response is divided into paragraphs, but the logical organisation and progression are severely compromised throughout. The introduction contains unnatural phrasing and punctuation errors, such as 'The diagram illustrates, the layout of to produce electricity'. While some cohesive devices are attempted (e.g., 'To commence', 'on the other hand, Nevertheless', 'Finally'), they are used incorrectly, mechanically, or redundantly, often cluttering the sentences rather than connecting ideas smoothly. Referencing is also unclear, as seen in expressions like 'all the conbination of stages were been done in the under the land due to in the land the soil which can improve the curical easily the process'. These issues restrict the score to Band 4.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and heavily repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors that strain the reader's understanding. Examples include 'power pant', 'eleciticty', 'curical', and 'transforeming'. The writer attempts some less common terms related to the prompt, such as 'geothermal energy', 'injection well', and 'condenser', but these are often embedded in ungrammatical or nonsensical collocations like 'long highted bulding'. Due to the limited control over vocabulary and numerous spelling errors, the response corresponds to a Band 4.0 for Lexical Resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of overly complex, convoluted attempts at sentences that break down due to pervasive structural errors. Almost every sentence contains multiple grammatical flaws, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('their are several five step'), incorrect verb forms ('the process are begain', 'the steam were been making the Turbine'), and incorrect prepositional phrases ('in the underground land'). Punctuation is also misused, including misplaced commas. Because errors are frequent, continuous, and often distort the intended meaning, the appropriate band score for this criterion is 4.0.
