The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of production of electricity by using geothermal energy.

Overall, the process consists of five stages, beginning with cold water being pumped into the injection well and ending with the electricity produced by the generator. This process is achieved by turning water into steam, which is then used to power the turbine to produce electricity.

At the initial stage, the cold water is pumped 4.5 km down into the injection well. After that, water passes through the injection well to the geothermal zone, consisting of hot rocks. When water passes through these hot rocks, its temprature increases and becomes really hot. Then, this hot water is pumped up, out of the production well, and reaches the condenser.

At the fourth stage, steam of hot water moves out of the condenser through a pipe and reaches the turbine section, where it powers the turbine by turning it. Finally, the spining motion of turbine powers the generator due to which electricity is produced.
