The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the process by which electricity is generated using geothermal energy.

Overall, the production of electricity involves five main stages. The process begins with cold water being pumped deep underground, where it is heated by hot rocks, and ends with electricity being generated after steam powers a turbine.

Initially, cold water is pumped from the surface to a depth of approximately 4.5 kilometres through an injection well. Once underground, the water passes through the geothermal zone, where it flows between layers of hot rocks. As a result, the water absorbs heat and becomes hot before being forced back to the surface through a separate production well.
