IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates the process of how geothermal energy is converted into electricity through a series of different stages.

Overall, the system is a closed loop cycle comprising underground heating through the hot rocks and surface level electricity generation via a power plant. The proess involves pumping cold water deep underground, heating it, turning it into steam, and finally coverting in into electricity.

To begin, cold water is stored at the surface and is pumped down deep through an injection well to a depth 4.5 km. Once underground, the water flows thorugh the geothermal zone consisting of the hot rocks, where it abosrb heat. Following this, the heated water is pumped back up through the production well with the same depth. This hot water passes through a condenser, producing steam which drives a turbine. The spinning turbine is connected with the generator, which ultimatly produces electricity that can distributed via power lines in the final stage.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the geothermal energy production process and making clear comparisons where relevant. The overview paragraph effectively captures the main stages, noting that it is a closed-loop cycle involving underground heating and surface-level generation. Key features such as the 4.5 km depth of the injection well, the geothermal zone with hot rocks, the condenser, the turbine, and the generator are all accurately reported. The response is well-developed, with a logical chronological progression that faithfully reflects the provided diagram without missing crucial steps.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Ideas are logically sequenced and easy to follow. The essay is divided into an appropriate introduction, an overview paragraph, and a detailed body paragraph. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader through the sequential steps of the process, such as 'To begin', 'Once underground', 'Following this', and 'in the final stage'. Referencing is clear throughout, and the paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to a smooth overall arrangement.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms such as 'converted', 'closed loop cycle', 'injection well', 'geothermal zone', and 'condenser'. However, there are a few noticeable spelling and typographical errors that slightly lower the precision, such as 'proess' instead of 'process', 'coverting' instead of 'converting', 'thorugh' instead of 'through', and 'abosrb' instead of 'absorb'. Despite these minor flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the technical information clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as participial phrases ('pumping cold water deep underground') and relative clauses ('electricity that can distributed'). There are occasional grammatical inaccuracies, notably a missing auxiliary verb in the passive construction ('can distributed' instead of 'can be distributed'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well-handled, and the majority of sentences are clear and grammatically sound, representing a solid Band 7 performance.
