IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram below illustrates in what way geothermal energy is utilized to generate electricity.

Overall, the process consists of five steps, beginning with the pumping of cold water deep underground and ending with the production of electricity by a generator. The key feature is that geothermal heat is used to convert water into steam, which drives a turbine.

At first, cold water is pumped at a depth of 4.5Kilometers undergo through the injection well. At this depth, the cold water reaches the geothermal zone consisting of hot rocks, in which the cold water is heated naturally. After that, the hot water passes through the production well.

Once above ground, the hot water enters a condenser in which it is converted into steam. The steam is subsequently moved towards the turbine, causing its blades to rotate. After this, the turbine powers the generator to produce electricity. Thus, the process uses heat from underground rocks to transform water into steam and generate electrical power. At the end, the electricity is supplied to the electricity tower and then to our houses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and stages of the geothermal power plant. An effective overview is provided, outlining the five-step process and the core mechanism of converting underground heat into electricity. Key details such as the 4.5-kilometre depth of the injection well and the conversion of water to steam via a condenser are accurately captured. The response is fully grounded in the visual data provided, showing a clear understanding of the sequential flow from cold water pumping to electrical generation and transmission.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from the beginning to the end of the geothermal process. Paragraphing is used appropriately, separating the introduction/overview, the underground phase, and the surface phase. Cohesive devices such as 'At first', 'After that', 'Once above ground', and 'subsequently' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the sequence of events without mechanical awkwardness.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary relevant to the process, such as 'utilize', 'geothermal zone', 'condenser', 'turbine', and 'transmission'. While most word choices are accurate, there are minor lexical slips such as 'undergo' instead of 'underground' and 'At the end' instead of 'Finally'. However, the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the technical steps clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating passive voice constructions effectively (e.g., 'cold water is pumped', 'is converted into steam'). The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate. Minor mechanical errors occur, such as the spelling of '4.5Kilometers' (missing space) and 'undergo' instead of 'underground', but these do not impede communication or obscure the meaning.
