The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram dipicts that how geothermal energy is being used to produced electricity by utilizing natural underground heat.

Overall, the process consist of five main stages. Firstly cold water is pumped in to the ground that is heated by the hot rocks. Then this hot water in the form of heat is collected to turn the blades of generator to produce electricity.

Initally, cold water that is stored in tanks is pumped down roughly 4.5km in the injection well. Cold water contacts the hot rocks in geothermal zones converting it in hot water. Then hot water is pumped up using motors from the production well.

Hot water is introduced in condensors which converts it in to high pressure steam. This high pressure steam is then directed towards turbine blades that starts rotating. This turbine is connected to generator that turns this rotational motion to electricity. Electricity is then supplied by transmission lines.
