IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of generating electricity using geothermal energy.
Overall, the process consists of five main stages, beginning with cold water being pump cold water 4.5km under and ending with electircity being produced by a generator. The water is heated by the hot pump prior to being converted into stream, which power a turbine.
Initially, cold water is pimped doen through the injection well and a depth is around 4.5 kilometers. It has been passing through the geothermal zone where hot rocks heat the water. Additionally, heated water travels through the underground pipes towards the production well.
In the third stage, the hot water is pumped back to the surface through the production level. It then enters the condenser where its converted into steam. The steam flows towards the turbine and causes its blade to rotate. finally, the rotating turbine powers a generator, which produce electricity that can be suplied to the power g

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all the key stages of the geothermal energy process, from the cold water storage and injection well at 4.5 km depth, through the geothermal zone and production well, to the condenser, turbine, and generator. An overview is successfully provided in the second paragraph, outlining the main stages. However, there are minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings in describing the mechanisms, such as 'hot pump' instead of hot rocks, and typographical issues like 'stream' instead of steam. Nevertheless, the main features are adequately selected, compared, and reported in line with the diagram. Band score reflects an appropriate coverage of all parts of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression that mirrors the steps in the process diagram. The introduction and overview paragraph sets a clear roadmap, and subsequent paragraphs follow the chronological order of the stages. Cohesive devices and sequence markers such as 'Initially' and 'In the third stage' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitional links could be smoother. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction/overview from the body details.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student attempts a range of vocabulary relevant to the diagram, including terms such as 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', 'production well', 'condenser', and 'turbine'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout, including 'electircity', 'pump cold water', 'stream' instead of steam, 'pimped doen', and 'suplied'. These errors demonstrate a lack of precision in lexical control, though communication is generally maintained because the context remains clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and passive voice constructions ('cold water is pimped doen', 'water is heated', 'electricity that can be suplied'). However, the text contains frequent grammatical and mechanical errors, including verb form errors ('being pump', 'causes its blade'), missing articles, and spelling slips ('finally' uncapitalised at the start of a clause, 'g' trailing off at the end). These issues occasionally distract the reader, keeping the score at Band 5.5.
