IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
First step see in the diagram is the diagram show how water will be converted in to electricity through the different steps.
First of all water should be collected in large amount and then water poured at 4.5 cm in depth of the earth here is the point called injection well after this point the next is geothermal zone where main process take place after water go in injection well the geothermal zone activated it converted the cool water in to hot water and pumed on upper side of the well.
After this processing hot go upward here at the corner corner condenser will be fitted. At this point steam wil be separated from the water and only hot water can be move at the next point.
At the end of the process the water goes to the gernetor turbine here with the help of condenser steam will be converted into electricity. After a long process electricity will be generated by follow the qll steps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student attempts to summarise the diagram showing how geothermal energy produces electricity, meeting the minimum word count with 164 words. However, the response falls into Band 4 territory due to significant inaccuracies and confusion in reporting the process. For instance, the depth of the injection well is misread as 4.5 cm instead of 4.5 km, and the mechanical sequence is severely confused (e.g., stating that the condenser separates steam before the water is heated, and placing the generator before the turbine). The overview is extremely weak, consisting of repetitive, conversational filler ('First step see in the diagram'). Key stages such as the turbine generating mechanical power to drive the electrical generator are incorrectly described. Overall, the information is presented with major omissions and misinterpretations of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response lacks logical organisation and clear paragraphing, presenting instead as a single block of text with run-on sentences. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, relying heavily on repetitive phrases like 'First of all', 'after this point', and 'At the end of the process'. There is no clear progression of ideas because the sequencing of the diagram's stages is muddled. Referencing is frequently unclear, such as the ambiguous use of pronouns and unlinked clauses ('After this processing hot go upward here at the corner corner condenser will be fitted'). While basic sequencing words are attempted, the overall arrangement fails to guide the reader through the cyclical or linear process effectively, placing this firmly in Band 4.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and strained, reflecting a Band 4 level. The student relies on elementary terms ('water', 'hot', 'cold', 'point', 'places') and commits numerous word-choice and spelling errors ('pumed' for pumped, 'gernetor' for generator, 'wil' for will). Less common lexical items related to geothermal energy—such as injection well, geothermal zone, condenser, and turbine—are either copied clumsily from the prompt or misused in context (e.g., 'gernetor turbine'). Word formation is weak, and spelling mistakes frequently occur ('cm' instead of 'km', 'corner corner'). Although the core topic is discernible, the lexical limitations significantly impede fluent reading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatically, the response demonstrates a very limited range of structures. Most sentences are poorly constructed run-on statements joined incorrectly by commas or coordinating conjunctions without proper punctuation (e.g., 'First step see in the diagram is the diagram show how water will be converted in to electricity through the different steps'). There are frequent, heavy errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and preposition use (e.g., 'water poured at 4.5 cm in depth of the earth', 'converted the cool water in to hot water and pumed on upper side'). Complex structures are rarely attempted, and when they are, they contain persistent errors that frequently distort meaning. Punctuation is largely neglected, resulting in a score of 4.0.
