IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram depicts the process of producing electricity using geothermal energy.

Overall, it can be seen that the process by which geothermal energy is used to produce electricity is a multistep linear process which consists of 4 different stages: injection, heating, conversion and generation, and a number of different tools and infrastructure, from cold water to producing electricity.

In the first stage, cold water is pumped down an injection well through a geothermal zone, which is 4.5 km depth. Following this, the water is transferred to a production well through the same geothermal zone where hot rocks heat the water. Then, the hot water is risen to the surface of the earth where hot water is generated into steam in a condenser.

In the last and final stage, the superheated steam is passed through a turbine and thus turbine gets powered and begins to move. Using the motion of turbine, electricity is produced and supplied through the power lines.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the geothermal energy production process. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, identifying the linear and multi-step nature of the system (injection, heating, conversion, and generation). Key data points from the diagram, such as the depth of 4.5 km and the sequence from the injection well through the geothermal zone to the production well, condenser, turbine, and generator, are accurately reported. The response is concise and covers the visual data well, achieving a solid Band 7 level for task response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response exhibits clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped logically into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by the initial stages of pumping and heating, and concluding with the conversion to electricity. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In the first stage', 'Following this', 'Then', and 'In the last and final stage' are used effectively to guide the reader through the process, even though referencing or transitions could be slightly more fluid in places.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to a process diagram, using terms such as 'multistep linear process', 'infrastructure', 'superheated steam', and 'transmission'. While vocabulary is generally appropriate, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as 'hot water is risen' instead of 'hot water is pumped up' or 'rises', and 'generated into steam' rather than 'converted into steam'. These occasional errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.5 to 7.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and adverbial time clauses ('Following this, the water is transferred...', 'where hot rocks heat the water'). Grammatical control is generally good, but there are a few noticeable errors, such as 'is 4.5 km depth' (should be 'is at a depth of 4.5 km' or 'is 4.5 km deep') and 'the hot water is risen' (passive voice misuse with an intransitive verb). However, the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
