IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The picture illustrates how electric current is generated in geothermal power plant by using water.
Overall, it is a step by step process that begins with cold water that is being pumping underground after passing through different stages it finally turns into steam to power turbine so electricity is produced for grid station.
The process commences with the cold water that is pumped downward to about 4.5km to injection well. Then water is passed from injection well to production well via horizontally geothermal zone which consists of hot rocks. After passing through these hot rocks water gets hot. Subsequently the production well pumps this hot water in upward direction, towards condenser.
At this stage steam is produced by condenser which generates a pressure to power the turbine. The electricity is produced by rotation of turbine. This electricity is send to PowerStation which supplies the electric current via power lines to surrounding areas for various purposes..

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the main stages of the geothermal energy production process, from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity. Key features such as the 4.5 km depth of the injection well, the geothermal zone with hot rocks, the production well, the condenser, and the turbine are accurately identified and reported. The overview provides a clear summary of the cyclical process. However, some minor details are slightly glossed over, such as the exact interaction between the condenser and the steam production. Overall, the task is well addressed, meeting all the requirements for Task 1 by providing a clear and accurate summary of the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that trace the sequence of the diagram step by step. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'The process commences with', 'Then', 'After passing through', 'Subsequently', and 'At this stage' are used effectively to guide the reader through the process. Paragraphing is logical and appropriate for the task. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional transitional links feel slightly mechanical. Overall, progression is maintained well from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, utilizing terms like 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', 'production well', 'condenser', and 'turbine'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but word choice and collocation issues occasionally surface, such as 'that is being pumping underground' instead of 'that is pumped underground' and 'send to PowerStation' instead of 'sent to the power station'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses ('that begins with cold water that is being pumping underground') and participial phrases. However, there are notable grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and voice, such as 'is being pumping' instead of 'is pumped', and 'is send' instead of 'is sent'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, though run-on issues appear in places like 'to power turbine so electricity is produced'. These errors occasionally draw attention, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 category.
