IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
the diagram depicts how to produce the electricity, firstly there is a large container of cold water which is approx 4.5km deep and on the bottom of it,It has a injection well from which the passes through the hot rocks and come out from the production well then pumped the hot water to the condenser. Afterwards it condense the water and pass the steam to the turbine and generator to produce the electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student has attempted to describe the process of generating electricity using geothermal energy, identifying key components such as the cold water container, the injection well, hot rocks, the production well, condenser, turbine, and generator. However, the response falls severely short of the 150-word minimum requirement, containing only 73 words. Because the length requirement is significantly unmet, and the overview and comparison features expected in an Academic Task 1 response are absent or extremely underdeveloped, the score is constrained to a band 4.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text consists of a single, run-on sentence connected by coordinating conjunctions and transition words like 'firstly', 'then', and 'afterwards'. There is no paragraphing used to structure the stages of the process, which severely impacts the logical flow and organization of the response. Referencing is also somewhat confusing, as seen in the phrase 'approx 4.5km deep and on the bottom of it,It has a injection well'. Cohesive devices are overused and mechanically strung together, resulting in a low score for this criterion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with terms directly lifted from the prompt or diagram, such as 'cold water', 'injection well', 'hot rocks', 'production well', 'condenser', 'turbine', and 'generator'. There are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'then pumped the hot water to the condenser' and 'It condense the water'. The limited range of vocabulary is barely adequate to describe the basic stages of the process.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response is heavily flawed grammatically, consisting essentially of one long, run-on sentence punctuated incorrectly. There are missing subjects and incorrect verb forms, such as 'from which the passes through' (missing noun) and 'It condense the water' (subject-verb agreement error). Complex structures are absent, and punctuation is largely neglected, with comma splices and lowercase beginnings after periods.
