IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram describes a process of Geothermal power plant through the generate electricity.
Overall, the diagram shows how geothermal energy is utilized to produce electricity.
As well as step invovled this process.
The process involved five steps. The main component is the cold water. The cold water pumped down to the 45km. After that water spread through the injection wall. Eventually, that called Geothermal zone. Geothermal zone also known as a hot rocks. The water passed through the hot rocks. After that, they produced hot water. Hot water pumped through up side and they modified condenser.
The main role of condenser that convert to the hot wayer to stream. After that, warmer aqa coverted to the stream. The stream surrounded by turbine.Stream pass thriugh the turbine and make it rotate.Turbine plays a salient role to the converted to the mechanical energy. Eventually, they generated produces electricity. Therefore, thus electricity, suppied to the Geothermal power plant point.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially by attempting to describe the geothermal energy process, but key features are underdeveloped or inaccurate. For instance, the student misinterprets the depth, stating '45km' instead of 4.5 km, and some stages are skipped or confused, such as the transition from hot water to steam through the condenser. While there is an attempt to outline the main steps from cold water being pumped down to the turbine and generator producing electricity, the explanation lacks clarity and precision. To reach a higher level, the student needs to present a clearer overview of the entire process, accurately report all key stages without mechanical listing, and ensure that numerical data and technical transitions are correctly conveyed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response shows some organisation with an attempted introduction and overall statement, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is disjointed and sentences are broken into single-line fragments rather than cohesive blocks of text. Cohesive devices are either missing or inadequately used, relying heavily on repetitive transitions such as 'After that' and 'Eventually'. Referencing is also weak, making it difficult to follow the logical sequence of the diagram. To improve, the writer should group related ideas into properly structured paragraphs and use a wider variety of accurate cohesive markers to guide the reader smoothly through each stage of the process.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'geothermal zone', 'condenser', 'turbine', and 'generator', but frequent errors in word choice, word form, and collocation restrict clarity. Examples include 'hot wayer', 'warmer aqa', and 'converted to the mechanical energy'. Spelling slips also occur, such as 'invovled', 'wall', and 'thriugh'. To move up to the next band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, use terms with greater precision, and eliminate basic spelling and word-formation errors that occasionally impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that are heavily flawed, resulting in frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are notable issues with verb tenses, missing articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, such as 'the process of Geothermal power plant through the generate electricity', 'cold water pumped down', and 'Stream pass thriugh'. Punctuation is also erratic. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to gain better control over basic sentence construction, improve grammatical accuracy across both simple and complex forms, and ensure proper use of verbs and articles.
