IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram provide the information on how geothermal energy is used to prodce electricity.

Overall, there are 5 main steps to make electricity with the use of geothermal engery, including passing the cold water through cold water pumped down to injection well making go through geothermal zone(hot rocks),it reached the production well through hot water pumped up made it to go condenser to steam it.finally, turbin to powered by steam and generator to powered bt turbine and produce electricity.

On the first hand, cold water needs to drop down through cold water pumped tp the injection well which have 4.5 km distance and it goes through geotermal zone to the prodction well to produce the hot rocks and it goes up through hot water pumped making it hot.

on the other hand, after it goes through hot water pumped,it goes up to condenser to steam the rocks,in contrast, turbine which is powered by steam and it generates the electricity which is powered by turbine and produce elctricity . finally, the electricity is successfully produced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the task by outlining the stages shown in the geothermal power plant diagram, but it only does so partially. While an overview is attempted at the beginning stating that there are five main steps, the explanation of the process is mechanical and heavily reliant on copying phrases directly from the visual prompt, such as 'cold water pumped down to injection well' and 'generator to powered bt turbine'. Some of the sequence and relationships between stages are unclear or confused, such as stating that the condenser 'steams the rocks'. The ideas remain limited and under-developed, preventing the response from achieving a higher level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization with paragraph breaks and introductory phrasing like 'Overall', 'On the first hand', and 'on the other hand', but these transition phrases are misused and fail to create clear logical progression or contrast. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow which part of the process is being described. Cohesive devices are repetitive and sometimes inaccurate, contributing to a choppy structure that lacks an overall smooth flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and heavily dependent on copying words directly from the diagram labels. There are noticeable lexical and spelling errors, such as 'prodce', 'engery', 'turbin', and 'bt', which cause some difficulty for the reader. The range of vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but attempts at describing the process lack precision, resulting in awkward collocations and phrasing like 'to steam it' and 'produce the hot rocks'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response exhibits a very limited range of sentence structures, relying on run-on sentences and overly long, poorly connected clauses, such as the sentence beginning with 'Overall, there are 5 main steps...'. Attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and agreement, such as 'The diagram provide', 'which have 4.5 km distance', and 'turbine which is powered by steam and it generates the electricity'. These frequent grammatical errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader throughout the text.
