IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram depicts the sequential process of how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Overall, it consits of five distinct stages. In the begining, cold water is pumped down in underground and culminating in generating the electricity from the geothermal energy.
Firstly, for producing the electricity from the geothermal plant, cold water is poured into the injection well, which is located 4.5 km beneath the soil. Furthermore, the cold water begin travels through the geothermal zone, where friction of hot rocks turn the cold water into hot water.
Conversely, hot water pumped up to the ground surface through the production well. Therefore, the condenser forward the steam to the turbine, which is powered by steam; turbine allocate the energy to the generator, where generator converts this energy into electricity. Lastly, all the produced eletricity now tranfered to the transformer, which later distributed into the residental areas such as houses, hospitals etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the geothermal electricity production process and including key details such as the depth of 4.5 km and the stages of the cycle. However, some aspects are under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the transition from the condenser and turbine to the generation of electricity contains mechanical phrasing, and details like the introduction of residential distribution go slightly beyond the provided diagram without clear integration. The overview successfully outlines the five distinct stages, but the overall development remains somewhat basic, placing this response solidly in the mid-range for task fulfillment.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical chronological progression from the initial pumping of cold water down to the final generation of electricity. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, overview, and body steps. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with transitional markers like 'Conversely' used inappropriately to link the upward pumping of hot water to the previous step. Referencing and logical connectors between sentences could be smoother, leaning towards the characteristics of a half-band achievement where organization is generally clear yet mechanical in places.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic process steps with terms such as 'sequential process', 'injection well', and 'geothermal zone'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'consits' instead of 'consists', 'begin travels' instead of 'begins travelling', and 'eletricity' and 'tranfered'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but these inaccuracies and occasional awkward collocations limit the lexical score, meaning communication is maintained despite minor strain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structures like relative clauses ('which is located 4.5 km beneath the soil'). Nonetheless, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('cold water begin travels'), missing prepositions ('pumped down in underground'), and tense inconsistencies. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede communication, aligning with the expected profile of frequent minor slips alongside a mix of structures.
