IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

the geothermal power plant is used to produse electricity.the first is cold water pumped down into tank throug a well whose lenth is 4.5 km and across the junction well.after that the cold water going to the geothrmal zone where applied a system whose change the cold water inti hot water with the help of hot rocks.the production well pumped the hot water up and across the hot water .the water reach into the condenser and then steam up . the avaporaization system applid in the hot water . the steam of water reach the turbine where turbine are rotating with the power of steam and produce energy with the help of powered by turbine and store into the generator.and then passes through with the help of electrical towers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only minimally, and the length requirement is not met, as the text contains only 129 words instead of the minimum 150. While the writer attempts to describe the geothermal power plant process by mentioning cold water, the 4.5 km well, hot rocks, the production well, and the turbine, the reporting is incomplete and lacks a clear overview of how the cycle operates. Many stages are either omitted, confused, or described with limited detail, such as the mechanism of the condenser and how electricity is ultimately distributed. Ideas remain underdeveloped and difficult to follow due to inaccuracies in summarising the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organisation in the sequence of the process, moving from the cold water to the turbine and generator, but there is no clear overall progression or paragraphing. The text is written as a single block without paragraph breaks, making it difficult to navigate. Cohesive devices are very limited and sometimes misused, such as 'the first is' or 'after that', leading to a mechanical and disjointed feel. Referencing between sentences is frequently unclear, and the lack of proper punctuation further disrupts the logical flow of ideas from one stage of the diagram to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are frequent spelling mistakes and word-choice errors, such as 'produse' for produce, 'throug' through, 'geothrmal' geothermal, 'inti' into, and 'avaporaization' evaporation. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'geothermal zone', 'condenser', 'turbine', and 'generator', the numerous inaccuracies in word formation and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple, poorly connected clauses. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, and agreements, such as 'cold water pumped down', 'the cold water going', and 'where turbine are rotating'. Prepositional use and articles are also weak throughout the text, as seen in 'reach into the condenser' or 'store into the generator'. Furthermore, punctuation is largely neglected, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and run-on structures that make the writing difficult to read.
