IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The procees shows about geothermal energy that is used to produce electricity. As the diagram shows it's first step is cold water, that will directly pumped out through underground . In underground geothermal zone means hot rock that the cold water will be turned into hot water and pumped up ways directly to earth surface.
After that hot water is pumped, our fourth step is condenser the hot steam will apper of hot water it will pass into generator turbine. The generator contains circuit that create energy through turbine and produces electricity
At last it pass through the tower of electricity, and that's how electricity is produces and through this we uses electricity from the sources this is huge process as explained and demonstrates in process as shown the main is water that is used to create electricity . water consumption is more in this . Hence, this is geothermal energy process

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the task only partially. While the writer attempts to describe the geothermal energy process, the coverage of the diagram's main stages is incomplete and lacks clarity. Some key steps, such as the specific role of the injection well reaching a depth of 4.5 km or the transition between the production well and the turbine via a condenser, are confused or under-developed. For instance, the text states that 'the hot steam will apper of hot water it will pass into generator turbine,' which misrepresents the sequential flow and mechanics shown in the visual data. The overview is also weak, failing to clearly outline the main overall stages of how cold water is converted into electricity. Ideas are limited and disjointed, preventing a fully developed presentation of the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The text is divided into three paragraphs, yet the sequencing of ideas feels disjointed and difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions like 'After that hot water is pumped, our fourth step is condenser' and 'At last it pass through.' Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to track whether the writer is referring to water, steam, or electricity. To improve, the writer needs to use clearer chronological markers and ensure that each sentence logically leads into the next to establish a smoother flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some topic-specific terms such as 'geothermal energy,' 'generator,' 'turbine,' and 'condenser,' but these are often used with noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'procees' for process, 'apper' for appear, and 'produces' instead of production. There are also frequent spelling errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'cold water, that will directly pumped out through underground.' These lexical inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band score. A wider and more accurate range of vocabulary is needed to describe scientific processes effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction. There are persistent issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'that will directly pumped out' (missing auxiliary or passive structure) and 'electricity is produces' (incorrect verb form). Prepositions and articles are also frequently missing or misused, as seen in 'in underground geothermal zone means hot rock' and 'pumped up ways directly to earth surface.' These errors are frequent and can cause difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning can still be partially discerned.
