IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram gives information about the generation of electricity from the energy gained from earth. The whole procdeure completes in five different steps.

Overall, cold-water supply, the injection well, hot rock, the production well, hot-water pump, condenser turbine, generator, and power tower are essential to produce this energy.

The production of geothermal energy starts from availability of cold water. This water is pumped down to 4.5km deep in the soil followed by its injection into the high temperature rocks which ultimately, heat up the water. After this, the production well is used to extract water from rocks, hence hot water is pulled above the earth surface with help of hot-water pump.

Subsequently, this hot water goes through condenser present at the surface of earth. Steam will passed from condenser to turbines resulting in the circular movement of turbines. The round motion of turbine will produce energy through generator. Consequently, this energy will be supplied to electricity tower that will spread it everywhere.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and summarising the main stages of the geothermal energy production process. However, some aspects are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the overview lists a random collection of components such as "cold-water supply, the injection well, hot rock, the production well, hot-water pump, condenser turbine, generator, and power tower" rather than outlining the broader mechanical phases. Furthermore, certain technical details in the body paragraphs are imprecise, such as claiming the production well extracts water directly from rocks using a "hot-water pump" when the diagram indicates steam and pressure dynamics. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present a more cohesive overview of the process as a whole and describe the key stages with greater technical accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay achieves a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically from start to finish. The writing is divided into an introduction, an overview, and distinct body paragraphs representing different phases of the diagram. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, using transition words like "followed by", "After this", and "Subsequently". However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel mechanical rather than fluid. For example, the transition between sentences in the second body paragraph could be smoother, and paragraphing could be better managed to separate the underground phase from the surface generation phase. To move into the higher band, the essay must demonstrate more seamless logical progression and more natural, varied cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, incorporating terms such as "generation of electricity", "injection into the high temperature rocks", and "circular movement". There are some successful attempts to use less common vocabulary like "procdeure" (spelled incorrectly) and "consequently". However, lexical control is inconsistent. There are noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as "procdeure" instead of "procedure" and "Steam will passed" (which is also a grammar issue, but reflects word form control). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural or repetitive when describing the equipment. These errors do not impede overall communication, but to achieve a higher band, the vocabulary needs to be more precise, natural, and free from basic spelling and word-formation slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as participial phrases ("followed by its injection") and relative clauses ("that will spread it everywhere"). There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as verb tense inconsistencies and missing articles (e.g., "completes in five different steps", "Steam will passed from condenser", "present at the surface of earth"). Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and they rarely impede communication. The control of punctuation and basic sentence boundaries is adequate. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over verb forms, passive structures, and article usage when describing technical processes.
