IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrate the process of electricity that generate through a Geothermal power plant is carried out.

Overall, the process consists of cold water, beginning with the bottom of the injection well and ending with the with Generator Turbine. It is a steam process.

Initially, cold water through 4.5 km to the bottom of the injection well takes place. Following this, are the second stage through cold water pumped down going Geothermal zone (hot rocks) hot water pumped up is carried out. After that, third and forth stage occurs Condenser. Once this stage is completed than the next and final stage begins that name are Turbine and Generator through Steam process.

In this stage, a whole condenser powered by steam. Subsequently, the next step of turbine and generator takes place.

Finally, in the end the electricity powered by turbine and produces electricity in the Geothermal power plant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response only partially addresses the task requirements. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the 150-word minimum by 4 words, containing 146 words in total. While the student attempts to outline the process of electricity generation in a geothermal power plant, the information is presented in a mechanical and disjointed manner. Important stages of the diagram, such as the cycle involving the injection well, geothermal zone, production well, and condenser, are expressed with confused language and lack clear, logical reporting of the main features. The overview is overly simplistic and fails to clearly summarise the overall progression of the process.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is hindered by mechanical and repetitive transitions such as 'Following this' and 'After that'. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate or inaccurate, resulting in sentences that do not flow logically from one to the next. Referencing between stages is often unclear, leaving the reader struggling to follow the sequence of the diagram. To improve, the student needs to use logical connectors more naturally and ensure that each sentence builds clearly on the previous one to establish a smooth progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts to use less common terms from the prompt, such as 'injection well', 'geothermal zone', and 'condenser', but these are often embedded in awkward collocations or incorrect word forms. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'electricity that generate through', which cause some difficulty for the reader. Spelling is generally acceptable for basic words, but word choices lack precision. To reach a higher level, the student should expand their range of vocabulary to describe processes more accurately and pay closer attention to word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or awkward attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb forms, missing articles, and incorrect prepositions, such as 'cold water through 4.5 km to the bottom' and 'that name are Turbine and Generator'. These errors cause frequent difficulty for the reader and obscure the meaning of the sentences. To improve, the writer needs to focus on fundamental sentence construction, ensuring proper subject-verb agreement and accurate use of relative clauses and passive forms.
