IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram elloborates the steps involve producing the electricity uisng geothermal energy.
Overall, the whole process consist on 5 different steps depends upon the output of very previous step. Two machineries generator and turbine and two natural ingrediants water and rocks with some humanied engineering use in the whole cycle.
At very begining, the cold water stored in a tank pumped down into the 4.5 killometers deep injection well which then flowed through a geothermal zone, where hot rocks heat up incomming water. The hot water then pumped up into a condenser where the process of removing the heat or steam from this high presssure water take place, then the steam is sent into a conatiner where turbine and generator are connected with each other. The steam is used to run the turbine in circuler motion and the generator powered by turbine's circuler movement result into the production of electricity. The produced electricity then transfer to grid stations for regular use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of how geothermal energy produces electricity and reporting the main features from the diagram, such as the 4.5 kilometre injection well, the geothermal zone, the condenser, turbine, and generator. The overview highlights the key components, including natural ingredients and machinery. However, some aspects of the process are slightly under-developed or vague, such as the transition from the condenser to the container where the turbine and generator are housed. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that all stages of the process are explained with greater clarity and precision without missing intermediate steps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from the cold water storage tank down into the injection well and through to the generation of electricity. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction and overview from the body details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in the overuse of words like 'then' to link consecutive actions, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'very previous step'. To improve, the student needs to employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure smoother transitions between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with an attempt to use less common items related to the topic, such as 'geothermal zone', 'condenser', and 'transmission'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('elloborates', 'involve', 'uisng', 'ingrediants', 'humanied', 'killometers', 'incomming', 'presssure', 'conatiner', 'circuler') and word choice issues ('consist on', 'very begining') that restrict the vocabulary to a more basic level. Some errors occasionally impede communication or cause strain for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student must expand their control of spelling, word formation, and precise collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of structures, with attempts at complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are several grammatical errors relating to verb forms and voice, such as 'steps involve producing' instead of 'steps involved in producing', 'consist on' instead of 'consists of', 'use in' instead of 'used in', and missing auxiliary verbs in 'The hot water then pumped up'. Additionally, there are articles and preposition errors throughout the text. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to increase control over basic verb structures, passive voice construction, and accurate prepositions.
