IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram show the processes of pruducing electricity by the uses of geothermal. overall,it start with cold water and end with how hot water generate electricity. To begin with , water collected and pumped down into 4.5 km in geothermal zone and injected well thorugh the hot rock process.after that it pruduce hot water and pumped up into condenser.further, condesor provide steam into turbine and steam powder by turbine .Turbine generate electricity by geothermal power plant

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 76 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only minimally. While the student attempts to outline the stages of the geothermal power plant process, such as mentioning cold water and the 4.5 km depth, the coverage remains extremely brief and underdeveloped. Key features like the injection well, geothermal zone, production well, condenser, turbine, and generator are touched upon superficially without adequate extension, comparison, or a fully formed overview. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the word count requirement is met and provide a much more thorough, well-developed summary of all visual data presented in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organisation attempted, including an introductory phrase and an overview marker ('overall,it start with...'). However, the overall progression is limited and disjointed due to the extreme brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes misused or lacking proper spacing and punctuation, as seen in 'overall,it start' and the fragmented sentence structures. Paragraphing is not properly managed, with the response crammed into a single block or erratic mini-sentences. To improve in this area, the writer needs to group related stages logically into distinct paragraphs, use a wider range of cohesive devices accurately, and ensure a clear, seamless progression from the beginning to the end of the process.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, reflecting a limited range suitable for this level. There are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling throughout the response, such as 'pruducing' instead of producing, 'thorugh' instead of through, 'pruduce' instead of produce, and 'condesor' instead of condenser. These lexical inadequacies and spelling errors occasionally strain the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary to include precise terms related to scientific processes and technical systems, while significantly improving spelling accuracy and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and frequently faulty sentence structures. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tense usage, articles, and punctuation, such as 'The diagram show' (subject-verb agreement error), missing capitalisation, and run-on phrasing like 'steam powder by turbine'. Complex structures are attempted poorly or omitted entirely. Punctuation and spacing are poorly controlled throughout the text. To progress, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures, ensure accurate subject-verb agreement and article usage, and eliminate frequent basic errors that hinder readability.
