IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The given diagram illustrates the gothermal power point plant is used to produce electricity.

Overall, there are 4 steps of producing eclectricity from the cold water beggning with plumped cold water eventally finished by stemed.

Initially, cold water have been pumped down around 4.5km and become ready for geothermal zone. After that, hot rocks into the the production well then hot wated has pluped up and goes to condenser. At last, maded hot water powered by steaming and ready to prowered by turbine and produce electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and fails to meet the required word count of 150 words, reaching only 84 words. While the student attempts to describe the geothermal energy process, the information provided is very limited, confused, and lacks adequate development. The overview is weak, and the details regarding the stages, such as the 4.5 km depth and the transition through the condenser, turbine, and generator, are poorly reported and inaccurate in places. To reach a higher level, the writer must expand the response well beyond the minimum word count, present a clear overview of the entire process, and report all key stages of the diagram accurately and fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with an introductory sentence and a concluding paragraph, but the overall progression lacks clarity and logical flow. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate, such as 'At last', which makes the sequencing mechanical and hard to follow. Paragraphing is attempted, but the text is far too brief to demonstrate skilful structuring. To improve, the writer needs to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers to connect the steps of the process logically, ensuring that each stage transitions smoothly into the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and contains numerous spelling and word-form errors that strain the reader's understanding. Examples include 'gothermal power point plant', 'eclectricity', 'beggning', 'plumped', 'stemed', and 'maded'. These frequent errors reflect a limited range and poor control over word choice and spelling. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, learn the correct spellings of technical terms related to processes and energy, and use word forms accurately, such as distinguishing between verbs, nouns, and adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that contain frequent and severe errors. There are significant issues with verb forms, tenses, passive voice, and prepositions, such as in 'cold water have been pumped down' and 'hot wated has pluped up and goes to condenser'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and confusion for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence structures, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and apply appropriate verb tenses and passive forms consistently when describing mechanical processes.
