IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the production of electricity from geothermal energy. There are five significant steps through which electricity can be made from cold water.
The cold water is stored in a huge container . It is pumped down about 4.5 km. It enters injection well and further to geothermal zone which are mainly hot rocks which increase the temprature of water making it hot. The hot water is collected in the production well , from where it goes upwards into condensor.Condensor changes the state of water from liquid to gaseous form . So the steam produced inside the condensor goes into turbine which rotates clockwise . Then the content goes into generator which is powered by turbine and produces electricity. Then the electricity is transferred to main electricity tower . From where it is distributed to residental and commercial areas.
Overall, the process of production of electricity is not complex. Second and third step take place underground and rest takes place above it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main steps of how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity. The introduction and overview successfully capture the general nature of the process, and the student correctly identifies key features such as the 4.5 km depth and the underground zone. However, some parts of the process are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies not supported by the visual data, such as claiming the turbine rotates clockwise or introducing external information about residential and commercial areas in the conclusion. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure all reported details are strictly derived from the diagram and extend the description of the transformation stages more thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, body, and conclusion, satisfying the lower band requirements while showing partial features of higher organization. Information is presented in a logical chronological sequence following the steps of the diagram. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, body process, and overview. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or relies on repetitive transitional phrases like 'Then' and 'From where'. Referencing could also be smoother to connect sentences more naturally. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure paragraphing transitions feel less abrupt.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', and 'condenser'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'temprature' and 'condensor', along with minor word choice slips and missing articles. The vocabulary is sometimes basic and repetitive, though it remains minimally adequate and communication is not impeded. To move up to the next band, the student should broaden their lexical variety, eliminate spelling mistakes, and use more precise scientific terms and collocations naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, describing the process using mostly present simple passive and active structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('enters injection well', 'into condensor'), incorrect prepositions, and punctuation spacing issues (e.g., spaces before periods). These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting the mixed control typical of this level. To reach a higher band, the student must increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and exercise better control over articles and punctuation.
