Student answer (Band 5.0)

As population of the word is increasing day by day, and the need of electricity is increasing. So a new innovation is introduced in market named geothermal energy. After hearing this, a though may came how this works, furthermore the first step is cold water pumped 4.5 km down in injection well which is geothermal zone (hot rocks) then moved to the production well,, moreover which then condensed in condenser after that it converts into steam which rotates the turbine and with the help of turbine the generator starts producing electricity. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 102 words, which significantly limits the overall development of the task. While the student attempts to summarise the diagram, the information is presented in a very basic and abbreviated manner. Key features of the process are mentioned, such as the cold water being pumped 4.5 km down into the injection well and the generation of electricity, but the explanation lacks clarity and a proper overview. The response tends to list steps rather than clearly synthesise and report the main features as required for an academic task of this type.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response suffers from a lack of proper paragraphing, as the entire summary is written as a single, long, run-on sentence connected by conjunctions and punctuation errors such as double commas ('well,, moreover'). Although there is a chronological sequence attempted, the overall organisation lacks a clear progression. Cohesive devices are used repetitively and inaccurately, particularly through conversational connectors like 'After hearing this, a though may came' and 'At last', which are inappropriate for an academic report. Referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of the process seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the process, such as 'geothermal energy', 'injection well', and 'condenser', but these are drawn directly from the prompt or represent basic technical terms. There are notable word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'though' instead of 'thought', 'came' instead of 'come', and awkward phrasing like 'a new innovation is introduced in market'. However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey a basic understanding of the diagram without completely impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of a single, highly convoluted sentence structure linked by excessive conjunctions rather than a mix of well-controlled simple and complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('As population of the word'), incorrect prepositions ('in market'), and faulty tense or clause structures ('a though may came how this works'). Punctuation is poorly handled, evidenced by run-on clauses and doubled punctuation marks. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of basic sentence boundaries and grammar.
