IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram illustrates the way we use gothermal energy to produce electricity .

Overall , the diagram shows the process of making from gothermal energy the electricity .

First step , pomped down a clod water underground with a depth of 4,5km , then enject that cold water in the gothermal zone means in the hot rocks under the ground to be pomped up to the ground as a hot water , that s how it producted .

Furthermore , the condenser goes into a steam where it powered in the trubine . at this stage , it goes from the trubine directly to the generator , now that the electrecity is well preduced it is ready to be used .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response only partially addresses the task. The student attempts to outline the process of generating electricity using geothermal energy, providing an overview and mentioning several steps such as pumping cold water down a 4.5km well, passing it through hot rocks, and using steam to power a turbine. However, the information is somewhat disjointed and lacks full development. Furthermore, the length requirement has not been met, as the response falls short of the minimum 150-word count, which limits the depth and completeness of the task coverage. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure all key stages are described fully, clear comparisons or relationships are established, and the word count requirement is fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization with basic introductory and transitional elements, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences within the body of the text are grouped tightly together rather than separated into logical steps of the process. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as "First step , pomped down" and "Furthermore , the condenser goes into a steam". Referencing and logical transitions between stages are frequently unclear, making the sequence difficult to follow smoothly. To improve, the writer needs to structure the response into clear, distinct paragraphs corresponding to the stages of the diagram, and employ cohesive links more naturally and accurately to guide the reader through the process.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-specific terminology, such as "gothermal energy", "condenser", "trubine", and "generator", but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling errors ("gothermal", "pomped", "clod", "enject", "producted", "electrecity", "preduced"). Word choice and word forms are often inaccurate, which causes some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range beyond basic terms, use precise vocabulary accurately without spelling errors, and demonstrate better control over word forms and collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and sentence construction that cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include fragment sentences and awkward phrasing such as "First step , pomped down a clod water underground with a depth of 4,5km , then enject that cold water...", missing subjects, and incorrect verb forms ("it producted", "where it powered in the trubine"). To move up, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures, improve control over verb tenses and passive voice (essential for describing processes), and eliminate frequent structural errors.
