IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

The diagram show the geothermal energy is use to produce electricity and describe the information by selecting and reporting the main point and the comparison the relevant.

First of all the cold water pumped down 4.5 km and tjhe injection well and the Geothermal zone main point hot rock and than the producation well and than the hot water pumped up and condenser and than steam and powered by styeam and the powered by turbine and produces electricity. And the main point Generator turbine and the electricity start .

The main point the cold water pumped down and than the hot water pumped up and the center work the the water condenser abd few time to steam and the power by steam and than the electricty produce and than electricity start the electricity the every city and village and the electricity uesd for everything and the help full the work

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response responds to the task only minimally and tangentially, failing to adequately summarise the process of generating geothermal energy. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met; the student's response contains 142 words, which falls short of the 150-word minimum (eight words copied from the task prompt were excluded). The writing struggles to present a clear overview of the main features shown in the diagram. Instead of a structured summary, the text attempts to list sequence steps like 'cold water pumped down 4.5 km', but these are disjointed, repetitive, and heavily reliant on direct copying or awkward paraphrasing of phrases from the prompt and diagram. Important stages of the process, such as the role of the condenser, turbine, and generator, are mentioned in a fragmented and underdeveloped manner rather than being clearly reported and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

Information and ideas are not arranged in a coherent manner, resulting in a text that lacks logical progression. The response is poorly structured, relying on a continuous, run-on flow of fragments and repetitive conjunctions like 'and then' rather than logical paragraphing. Cohesive devices are used inadequately and inaccurately, such as the repetitive use of 'and the main point' and 'and than', which creates a confusing reading experience. There is no clear overall organisation or direction to guide the reader through the stages of the diagram from the injection well to the production of electricity, causing the ideas to blur together without clear thematic grouping or transitional markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing a very limited range of words that often strain comprehension. The student relies heavily on lifting terms directly from the visual prompt, such as 'cold water', 'injection well', 'Geothermal zone', 'production well', 'condenser', 'steam', 'turbine', and 'generator'. There are noticeable lexical errors, word-form issues, and awkward phrasing throughout, such as 'producation' for production, 'styeam' for steam, and 'electricty produce'. These errors and the restricted vocabulary range mean the response fails to demonstrate adequate flexibility or precision in describing technical processes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mostly of fragmented phrases and severely flawed sentence structures rather than complete, well-formed clauses. Errors are frequent and often distort meaning, making it difficult for the reader to parse the relationships between clauses. There are persistent issues with verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'The diagram show the geothermal energy is use'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and a complete absence of reliable punctuation control. Complex sentence forms are absent, and basic sentence boundaries are frequently blurred by run-on structures linked inappropriately with 'and'.
