IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates how electricity is produced by the geothermal process.
Overall, the process is divided into five parts from first step of cold water to the last step of turbine and electricity generator. In this process the the cold water goes through a long tube to the geothermal zone. After this process the water turns into steam and produce pressure to run the generator, thus electricity is generated.
As we can see that in the first part of the process the cold water is pushed into a 4.5 kilometer deep injection well, in the second part the water move towards the production well through the geothermal zone. While in third section the hot water is pumped upward in the form of steam.
Then in the forth section, the steam is condensed in the condenser and is pushed toward the turbine. The last part is the impotant one because the high pressure steam start rotating the turbine .As a result, the generator starts generating power.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the geothermal energy production process and selecting key features from the visual data, such as the 4.5-kilometre injection well, the geothermal zone, the condenser, the turbine, and the generator. However, some aspects of the process are somewhat under-developed or generalized. For instance, the transition of water into steam is described broadly without capturing the full cyclical nature or precise mechanical progression shown in the diagram. The overview is clear and sets out the stages effectively, meeting the criteria for a solid performance where main trends and features are appropriately reported, though further extension of specific stages would be required to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the initial stage of cold water to the final generation of electricity. Paragraphing is utilized to break down the stages of the process, moving from an introduction and overview into detailed sequential steps. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Overall', 'In this process', 'As we can see that', and 'Then in the forth section', although some referencing and linking mechanisms feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('in the first part', 'in the second part', 'in third section'). Furthermore, minor mechanical errors in cohesion prevent the response from achieving a more fluid narrative flow, reflecting a standard organization where the overall message remains clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'geothermal process', 'injection well', 'production well', 'condenser', 'turbine', and 'generator'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that reflect a standard vocabulary range. Examples include 'forth' instead of 'fourth' and 'impotant' instead of 'important'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items with varying degrees of accuracy, and while these occasional lexical errors do not impede communication, they restrict the score. Developing greater precision in collocations and eliminating spelling slips would elevate the lexical profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'The diagram illustrates how electricity is produced...' and 'As a result, the generator starts generating power.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, such as article misuse ('in first step', 'in the forth section'), redundant phrasing ('the the cold water'), and missing commas or incorrect subject-verb agreement ('the water move', 'steam start'). These errors occur regularly across the text, yet they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar shows an adequate foundation of simple sentences alongside attempted complex structures that contain frequent minor lapses.
