IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustrates the layout of grothermal energy is utilise to produce electricity.
Overall, it can be seen that the process consists five stages initiate with cold water from the dam and ended with Generator powered by trubine and produce electricity.
To commence, to rising the Geothermal power plant so the Firstly the cold water which collected from the dams. However, all the water were pumped down sharply at 4.5 km. secondly the injection well to divert all the water from south to east side with assist of Geothermal zone which also produce hot rocks. Therefore, water passed from the upper side with the production well which the hot water pumped up.
On the other hand, after the completeting the process the hot water passed through Condenser which converted into small coulds part. On account of, steam whci direcly transform into the Turbine which rotates 360 degree and producing more power by steam. Finally, the Turbine are tranforming all the power in to the Generator which creating more power and produce electricity in many big towers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main stages, from water being pumped underground to electricity generation, and include the 4.5 km depth. The overview also recognises the process’s start and end points. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows water passing through hot rocks, not that the geothermal zone itself “produce[s] hot rocks”; the condenser releases steam, rather than converting water into “small clouds”; and the generator produces electricity, not “more power” in “many big towers.” The description of the turbine rotating 360 degrees is not shown in the diagram. To strengthen the response, report the stages precisely and give a clearer overview of how underground heating leads to steam that drives the turbine and generator. Some stages are explained more fully than others.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by descriptions of the underground stages and the equipment at the surface. Sequencing words such as “To commence,” “Therefore,” and “Finally” help signal order. However, progression is sometimes difficult to follow because several transitions are inaccurate or mechanical. For example, “On the other hand” suggests a contrast where the process simply continues, while “To commence, to rising…” makes the start of the sequence unclear. Some references, such as “all the water” and “the process,” are not always precise. Use straightforward stage-by-stage paragraphs and connect each step with clear references, such as “The heated water then rises through the production well.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt vocabulary relevant to the process, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine.” This gives the description some task-specific range. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling sometimes make the meaning unclear: “small coulds part” does not clearly describe steam, “divert all the water” is not a natural description of its movement, and “produce electricity in many big towers” misrepresents the diagram. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “grothermal,” “trubine,” and “whci.” Aim for precise process verbs such as “pump,” “heat,” “rise,” “release,” and “drive,” and check the spelling of technical terms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable despite grammatical problems. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent. For example, “the process consists five stages initiate with…” needs a complete, correctly formed clause, while “the hot water passed through Condenser which converted” has unclear clause structure and agreement. Other examples include “all the water were pumped” and “the Turbine are tranforming,” where subject–verb agreement and verb forms are incorrect. Articles and prepositions also need attention, as in “through Condenser” and “in to the Generator.” Practise building accurate sentences with one clear subject and verb, then add subordinate clauses only when their grammar is secure.
