IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram demonstrate the full process of electricity production using geothermal energy .

Overall, this picture shows how cold water pumped down, where its goes through geothermal zone and it produces water steam . Meanwhile, steam goes through turbine and which powered the generator which eventiually produces electricity .

Initially, Cold water is injected into well which is roughly 4.5 km down after that water goes through geothermal zone, which is made of hot rocks . However, water reaches the production well which pumped the water up .

After hot water pumped up it becomes steam in condenser and steam passes through condenser to turbine . the rotation of turbine is mainly caused by powerfull force of steam. After the rotation of turbine , turbine is connected with a generator. After all this process at last electricity is generated through generator and distributed by electric tower .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and give a relevant overview, tracing cold water through the hot-rock zone before steam drives the turbine and generator. The main stages are mostly covered, including the 4.5 km depth and the production well. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the water is heated underground and pumped up as hot water, then converted to steam in the condenser; your wording that it “becomes steam in condenser” is broadly right, but saying steam “passes through condenser to turbine” reverses the sequence. The final distribution by an “electric tower” is not clearly shown as a process stage. The response is also three words below the required minimum. Develop the sequence more precisely and include the missing length to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological description of the stages. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “After,” and “At last” help the reader follow the process. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because “After” is repeated several times, and some links create unclear relationships. For example, “Meanwhile” does not introduce a contrasting process, while “After hot water pumped up” leaves the connection between stages incomplete. The sentence beginning “Overall” also combines several steps in a way that makes the sequence difficult to follow. Use fewer repeated transitions and connect each stage with clear references, such as “The heated water then rises…” and “Once converted to steam…”.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “injected,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator.” These terms make the subject clear, and “hot rocks” accurately describes the underground zone. There are also some imprecise or unnatural choices: “electric tower” is not the usual term for the transmission structure, and “powerfull force” is an awkward description of how steam drives the turbine. Spelling errors such as “eventiually” and “powerfull” reduce accuracy, while “water steam” is less natural than “steam.” Aim for precise technical collocations and check spelling; this would make the description more fluent without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the geothermal zone, which is made of hot rocks,” and a sequence of passive constructions suited to a process diagram. However, some errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “The diagram demonstrate” needs subject–verb agreement, and “how cold water pumped down” is missing an auxiliary verb. “Where its goes” has an incorrect pronoun and verb form, while “which pumped the water up” needs a passive form such as “which pumps the water up.” Several sentence boundaries and capital letters are also inconsistent. Review passive forms and auxiliary verbs, then proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly punctuated structure.
