IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The map illustrate how electricity is genrated by using geothermal energy Overall , it is seen that how geothermal plants work to produce electricity by using several process which begins from cold water and make end product The process comens with cold water which travel 4.5 km although clod water pumped down to the injection well moreover which go through geothermal zone in which presence of hot rocks further goes to the production well Moving further, the water get hot and pumped up further more water goes in condenser and steamed moving towards there is generator turbine in which there presence of two machines in which firstly there is rotation further more the turbine produces electricity which further transfers to massive electricity towers

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the process as electricity generation from geothermal energy and include several relevant stages: water is sent down the injection well, heated by hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and used in the plant. However, the overview is vague and does not clearly summarise the full sequence from cold water to electricity. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: 4.5 km describes the depth of the well, not how far the water travels, and the turbine does not itself produce electricity—the turbine drives the generator. The condenser’s role in producing steam is also difficult to follow. The response is 28 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail available. A more complete, accurate account of each stage would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, with an opening statement, an overview, and a description beginning with the water’s movement underground. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall” and “Moving further” also signal progression. However, the ideas are presented as one long, loosely connected sequence rather than in clearly separated paragraphs, and the progression becomes difficult to follow near the end. Connectors such as “further more” and “further” are repeated, while “moreover which” does not clearly show how the stages relate. The reference to “two machines” is also unclear. Use a short overview paragraph followed by a step-by-step body paragraph, and connect each stage with precise, varied transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” and “condenser,” which helps identify key parts of the diagram. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the description unclear, such as “steamed” for steam, “electricity towers” for transmission infrastructure, and “rotation” without explaining what rotates. Spelling errors, including “genrated,” “comens,” and “clod,” are noticeable and can distract the reader. Aim for accurate technical terms and natural collocations, for example, describe water as being “heated by hot rocks” and electricity as being “transmitted through power lines.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to combine stages using clauses, but the sentence structures are often faulty, and there is little evidence of consistently controlled sentence variety. For example, “Overall, it is seen that how geothermal plants work” uses an incorrect clause pattern, while “which go through geothermal zone” has unclear agreement and article use. In “the water get hot and pumped up,” the verb form and passive construction are not controlled. Long strings joined by “further more” also lack clear sentence boundaries and punctuation, making relationships between actions hard to understand. Practise writing shorter, complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, then use accurate passive forms such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “Hot water is brought to the surface.”
