IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process chart shows how the geothermal power plant is used to produce electricity .

Overall, this process comprises of 5 main stages where the injection pushes the water for further process and it becomes steam to rotate the turbine connected to the generator which produces electricity. And these are the main components of the whole plant.

Following this, the stored water at the ground flows 4.5 kelometers deep where there is the injection well and through the geothermal zone, where it is intensely heated by hot rocks embedded deep within the earth. Once heated, the hot water is extracted and pumped back up through a production well into a condenser. So, again it reaches to the ground level

This steam powers a turbine , which drives a generator to produce electricity and then to the national grid .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main sequence: water is sent underground, heated, returned to the surface, and used to generate electricity. The overview also captures the turbine–generator relationship, and the 4.5 km depth is reported accurately. However, some stages are not fully or precisely described. The diagram shows cold water passing through the hot-rock zone before it rises in the production well; your wording suggests it flows “through the geothermal zone” but does not clearly explain this transition. You also say the water “becomes steam” without clearly identifying the condenser as the stage where steam is produced. The response is 11 words below the required minimum, which limits the detail available. Add a little more precise description of the stages and the electricity transmission shown.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a description of the process in sequence. Phrases such as “Once heated” help signal the transition from underground heating to the return journey. However, progression is weakened by some awkward or unclear links. “Following this” does not clearly connect the overview to the first process stage, while “So, again it reaches to the ground level” is an imprecise transition and repeats information. The sentence beginning “And these are the main components” is also detached from the preceding overview. Organise the body into a clear start-to-finish account, using concise links such as “Next” and “Finally” only where they clarify the sequence, and avoid standalone fragments or repeated transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “extracted,” and “generator.” These terms help communicate the main stages, and “embedded deep within the earth” is an attempt at more descriptive language. Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “process chart” is less suitable for a diagram of a process, “kelometers” is misspelled, and “the injection pushes the water” does not express the intended action clearly. “National grid” is not shown in the transcription; the diagram indicates electricity transmission but does not name the destination. Prefer precise, conventional process language, such as “water is pumped down” and “electricity is transmitted,” and check spelling of technical terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex forms, including the relative clause in “hot rocks embedded deep within the earth” and the time clause “Once heated, the hot water is extracted.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. “This process comprises of 5 main stages” uses an incorrect pattern; write “comprises five main stages” or “consists of five main stages.” The overview begins a sentence with “And,” and “So, again it reaches to the ground level” has an unclear subject and awkward clause construction. There are also unnecessary spaces before punctuation and inconsistent sentence boundaries. Aim for complete, clearly punctuated sentences, and vary sentence structures while checking that each clause has an explicit subject and a well-formed verb pattern.
