IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates that how geothermal energy is used to generate electricity.
Geothermal power plant's diagram describe the full procedure for production of electricity. There are total five main camponants in which different gedets work together. Main parts of the diagram are Cold water, a injection well, the production well, a Condenser, and a generator turbine.
The process starts from a carriage in which cold water store and fell into a 4.5 km injection well. The injection well pumped down the cold water and supply to the geothermal zone where the production well pumped up the cold water into the condenser. Steam from the condenser shift in the turbine and turbine power the generator. Generator shifts the electicity to the

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the general subject and include several relevant stages, including the 4.5 km injection well, the geothermal zone, steam, the turbine and generator. However, the response only minimally covers the process: it ends mid-sentence at “Generator shifts the electicity to the”, so the final output is not explained, and there is no clear overview of the complete sequence. Some details are also inaccurate or unclear: the water is stored in a tank, not a “carriage”, and it is heated as it passes through the hot rocks before being pumped up. The response is 120 words, below the required 150. To improve, complete the account, accurately describe each transformation, and add a concise overview of the process from cold water to electricity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic sequence, moving from cold water through the wells and geothermal zone to the condenser, turbine and generator. This gives the reader some sense of the process order. However, the response has no distinct overview or well-developed paragraph structure, and the final sentence is unfinished, which interrupts progression. Connections between stages are sometimes unclear, particularly in “where the production well pumped up the cold water into the condenser”; the reader has to infer how the water moves and changes. Use a clear opening overview, then describe the underground and surface stages in order. Linking phrases such as “Next”, “After being heated” and “Finally” can make the sequence easier to follow without repeating “and”.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well”, “production well”, “geothermal zone”, “condenser” and “turbine”. These terms help identify the main components. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spelling errors make the description difficult to understand: “camponants”, “gedets”, “carriage”, “fell” and “electicity”. Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “turbine power the generator” and “Generator shifts the electicity”. Choose precise process verbs and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as being “stored” and “pumped”, and say that the generator “produces electricity”. Avoid using “shift” for the movement or production of electricity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response mainly uses simple statements and attempts to connect stages in longer sentences, as in “The injection well pumped down the cold water and supply to the geothermal zone”. However, verb forms and sentence construction are frequently inaccurate, sometimes obscuring who or what performs each action. Examples include “diagram illustrate”, “water store”, “the production well pumped up” and “turbine power”. Articles and sentence patterns also need attention, as in “a injection well” and “illustrates that how”. The final sentence is incomplete, leaving its clause without an object or ending. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The heated water is pumped up”, and check subject–verb agreement and sentence completion.
