IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

Hello! I thankfull to you for that kind of respect and give chance to explain this here is a diagram of Geothermal power plant and i explain in my words here is a main thing is a Generator and Turbine and in left hand is a cold water and under 4.5km cold water pumped down and injection well and continuesly move forward Geothermal zone in ( Hot rocks ) and the production well and now move upward convert into hot water pumped up and become Condenser in steam toward powered by steam and then power by turbine and produces electricity then produce electricity and provide to public and that is the total process how to produce Geothermal power plant and which inventories can used in .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several central components, including the cold water, the injection and production wells, the geothermal zone, the condenser, steam, the turbine and generator. You also mention the 4.5 km depth and convey the broad movement from water being pumped down to electricity being produced. However, the process is only minimally summarised: there is no clear overview of the main stages, and some relationships are unclear, such as “become Condenser in steam.” The claim that electricity is “provide[d] to public” is not shown in the diagram, which only depicts transmission lines. The response is also 24 words below the required minimum, limiting the detail provided. A fuller, accurate account of each stage would make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a rough sequence from the cold water on the left, through the underground wells, to steam and electricity, so the reader can recognise the intended process. However, nearly all the information is placed in one long sentence, with repeated linking words such as “and” and “then.” This makes the stages run together and obscures how one component leads to the next. Phrases such as “and continuesly move forward Geothermal zone” and “and then power by turbine” do not clearly connect the ideas. Organise the description into short paragraphs or clearly separated stages, and use precise sequencing expressions such as “first,” “after passing through,” and “finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine” and “generator.” These terms show that you have identified the main equipment. However, the range is limited and several word choices or combinations are unclear, for example “become Condenser in steam,” “power by turbine,” and “inventories can used.” “Produce electricity” is repeated, and “public” adds a claim not supported by the diagram. Aim for accurate process verbs and natural collocations, such as water being heated, steam driving a turbine, and a generator producing electricity. Check spelling and word forms, including “continuously,” to make the description easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe a sequence, but it relies mainly on a single extended sentence joined by “and,” with little control of sentence boundaries or punctuation. There are frequent errors in sentence structure and verb forms, as in “i explain in my words,” “cold water pumped down,” and “which inventories can used.” The final phrase, “that is the total process how to produce Geothermal power plant,” also lacks a clear grammatical relationship between the process and its purpose. These errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. Practise writing short, complete sentences in the present simple, for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well” and “The steam drives a turbine.”
