IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram gives illustration on how geothermal power is connected in order to produce electricity.

Overall, the process entails five stages:cold water, the injection well, the production well, condense and generator turbine. cold water is a compulsory material in order to initiate the procces of power ignition. There are two underground processes; the injection and production wells and three surface processes including condenser , cood water and generator turbine.

In the initial stage, cold water is pumped into the injection well which is 4.5km deep. Here, the cold water is passed through a geothermal zone which consists of hot rocks for heating before being stored in the production well. Here, the heated water is pumped out through an underground tunnel up to a condenser which situated above the ground. The condenser tends to cool the water hence through that process the hot steam enters the generator turbine.

The generator turbine consists of small wires to moves in an circular motion when powered by steam. This movements of turbines produces electricity which is then connected to the cables to be used by the consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from cold water being pumped underground to electricity generation, and correctly include the 4.5 km depth and the geothermal zone of hot rocks. The overview also recognises the underground and surface parts of the process. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the water is not stored in the production well, and the condenser does not cool it; it converts the heated water into steam. The account also omits the turbine as a distinct stage and incorrectly describes wires moving in a circular motion. The diagram shows the turbine being powered by steam and driving the generator. Your main features are relevant, but these points need more precise reporting and development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the process in sequence. Transitions such as “In the initial stage” and “Here” help the reader follow the movement of water. However, “Here” is repeated and sometimes leaves its reference unclear, while the overview’s list of stages is confusing because it combines or misnames components (“condense and generator turbine”). The distinction between underground and surface stages is useful, but the surface-stage summary is not fully consistent with the diagram. Organise the process into clear, accurately labelled steps and use more varied, precise referencing to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” and “powered by steam,” which helps convey the subject. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “gives illustration on,” “power ignition,” “stored in the production well,” and “small wires to moves.” Spelling errors, including “procces” and “cood,” also reduce precision. The range is sufficient to attempt a description, but repeated reliance on general terms such as “process” and “Here” limits flexibility. Choose standard technical verbs and nouns, and check spelling and collocations so the stages are described clearly and naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a geothermal zone which consists of hot rocks” and a result clause in “This movements of turbines produces electricity.” The sequence is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “which situated above the ground” needs a verb (“which is situated”), and “This movements … produces” has a number-agreement error. The sentence beginning “Overall” also has a faulty list structure, and punctuation around the colon and commas is inconsistent. Aim for accurate subject–verb agreement, complete clauses, and parallel lists; these corrections would make your varied sentence attempts more controlled.
