IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given picture below illustrates the steps involved to produce electricity using geothermal energy.
Overall, there are a total of five steps involved in the process which initiates from the pumping of cold water and concludes with turbines generating electricity.
Initially, the cold water flowing through the dam is pumped 4.5 kilometer downwards to the injection well. Following this, the water is transferred to the geothermal zone. The geothermal zone is basically the heated rocks underground. After heating the water it is then moved towards the production well.
Furthermore, the hot water is then pumped upwards into the condenser from the production well with the aid of pumping machine. The condenser is used to convert the liquid into vapour. The steam produced is basically used in order to power the turbine. Finally, the rotation of turbines produces electricity in the generator which is later distributed with the help of eletical poles and wires.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence from cold-water injection through underground heating to electricity generation, and the overview identifies the process’s beginning and end. Several details are also accurate, including the 4.5-kilometre depth and the roles of the geothermal zone and turbine. However, the overview says there are five steps, while the diagram’s numbered stages do not clearly support this count, and it incorrectly suggests that the turbines generate electricity: the turbine drives the generator, which produces it. The claim that a pumping machine helps raise the hot water is not shown. To strengthen the response, describe the stages more precisely and distinguish the condenser’s production of steam from the turbine-generator’s production of electricity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by the underground stages and then the equipment at the surface. Sequencing expressions such as “Initially,” “Following this,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the process. This gives the account coherent progression, although some linking is mechanical and the paragraphing could make the stages easier to scan. “Furthermore” does not signal a particularly clear relationship between the preceding and following steps, and “After heating the water it is then moved” has an unclear reference. Group the description into distinct phases and use concise links that show sequence, while making each pronoun’s referent explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “steam,” which makes the subject clear. There is some variety in how you describe movement and transformation, but several choices are imprecise or awkward for a technical process. “Dam” is not the source shown in the diagram, “pumping machine” adds an unsupported piece of equipment, and “eletical poles” is misspelled and does not accurately name the transmission structure. “Turbines generating electricity” also blurs the roles of the turbine and generator. Aim for precise process collocations and check spelling; alternatives such as “water tank,” “transmission pylon,” and “drives the generator” would improve accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the relative clause in “which is later distributed” and the time clause “After heating the water.” Most of the process remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation slips are present. In “Initially, the cold water,” a space is needed after the comma; “After heating the water it is then moved” needs a comma after the introductory clause and has an awkward passive construction. “The rotation of turbines produces electricity in the generator” also has an unclear relationship between the subject and the action. Use a consistent present simple for process descriptions, punctuate introductory clauses, and construct sentences so the agent and action are clear.
