IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The following diagram exhibit how geothermalenergy is utilized to generate electricity.

Overall, the manufacturing of electricity under goes several different steps starting from cold water to generator turbine. It is obvious to see that the cold water is pumped downwards initially, and hot water is pumped upwards at the opposite position. In addition only two steps take place between the cold water and then later changing into hot water.

In more detail, the first step is that cold water travels downwards for 4.5 km and reach the injection well which further moves in the straight direction to the geothermal zone containing hot rocks and enters the production well, here the hot water is pumped up and enters the condenser vertically. Furthermore, the last step shows that the steam is created and transfered to the generator turbin which rotates and reaches its last stage. Aditionally, here it is powered by steam, turbine and produces electricity. At the end it proceeds to the tower and is available to use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the process as a sequence and include several key stages: cold water is sent down the injection well, heated by hot rocks, brought up through the production well, and converted to steam before electricity is generated. The 4.5 km depth is also reported accurately. Your overview, however, is partly unclear: “only two steps take place” does not accurately summarise the full process, and the account does not clearly explain that steam powers the turbine, which in turn drives the generator. The final reference to a “tower” is imprecise; the diagram shows a transmission pylon. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of the complete transformation and describe the turbine and generator roles distinctly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and a more detailed paragraph, and the stages are generally presented in process order. Sequencing phrases such as “Overall,” “In more detail,” and “At the end” help guide the reader. However, some connections are unclear or mechanically expressed. For example, “which further moves in the straight direction” leaves it uncertain whether the water or the well moves, while “here” is used for different locations and stages. The overview’s “only two steps” also conflicts with the longer sequence that follows. Use clearer references and connect each stage explicitly to the next to make the progression more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser” and “steam,” which helps communicate the diagram’s subject. There is some variety in describing movement, such as “pumped downwards” and “pumped upwards.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “manufacturing of electricity,” “generator turbine,” and “available to use” do not describe the process naturally. Spelling errors such as “transfered,” “turbin” and “Aditionally” also reduce control. Aim for precise technical phrasing and check spelling; for example, distinguish the turbine from the generator rather than combining them into one term.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including a general overview and longer sentences describing several stages. The main sequence is usually understandable, but some grammatical errors make relationships between actions unclear. In “the first step is that cold water travels downwards for 4.5 km and reach,” the verb should agree with the singular subject (“reaches”). The sentence beginning “Furthermore, the last step shows…” joins several actions without clear structure, and “the steam is created and transfered” needs a consistent passive form (“is created and transferred”). There are also article and sentence-boundary issues, such as “enters the condenser vertically” and the comma splice before “here.” Use shorter, controlled sentences for each stage, then check agreement, tense and punctuation.
