IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given process diagram illustrate the mass manufacturing od Geothermal power plant . The process is a joint venture of human and machines which work togather for a singal final product .
Overall , it can be seen that mass producation of geothermal power plant carried out by the more then five distinctive parts . In additionally , the process start cold water and end at the generator and turbine . Furthermore , all these steps is very important of the conected with each other .
Talking about initial step , the first step is cold water , which then following cold water pumped down and distance 4.5 km , then comes the injection well , The producation well . The process complete almst half of the total procedure .
Pouring some light on finalizing step , the final step is very critical to get the finalzing producat . the final step is obtained by hot water pumped up in condenser , steam turbine (powerd by steam ) at the end Generator ( powerd by turbine and produces electricity . Hence , a finished product is obttained by diffrent phases the mass manufacturing of electricity .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the subject as a geothermal power process and include several relevant labels, including the 4.5 km depth, the injection and production wells, steam, the turbine and generator. However, the account only partially explains how these stages connect, and some details are unclear or inaccurate: you say the process starts with cold water and ends at the generator and turbine, although the turbine drives the generator and electricity is the final output. The overview also calls this “mass manufacturing,” which does not describe the diagram’s main feature: water is heated underground and converted to electricity through a sequence of stages. To improve, give a clear overview of that transformation, then report the stages in their correct order, including hot water rising to the surface before steam powers the turbine.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for the initial and final stages, so there is some organisation. However, progression through the process is difficult to follow because the middle stages are compressed into fragments such as “then comes the injection well, The producation well,” without explaining what happens between them. The overview also repeats general statements about the steps being important and connected rather than guiding the reader through the sequence. Linking phrases such as “Talking about initial step” and “Pouring some light on finalizing step” are awkward and do not clarify relationships. Organise the body in the diagram’s order and use direct links such as “Next,” “After being heated,” and “Finally” to make the sequence clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt some process-related vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine” and “generator,” which helps identify the equipment. However, the range is limited by repeated, unsuitable phrases such as “mass manufacturing,” “final step” and “finished product”; these make the description sound like a factory process rather than an energy-generation system. Several spelling errors, including “togather,” “singal” and “obttained,” also distract the reader, while “joint venture” is not an appropriate collocation for the relationship between people and machines here. Use precise process verbs and nouns, for example, “water is pumped,” “is heated,” “steam drives the turbine” and “electricity is generated.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
There are attempts to use longer structures, such as “which then following cold water pumped down,” but these are often faulty, and most sentences rely on simple or incomplete patterns. Errors in agreement and verb forms appear in “The given process diagram illustrate” and “the process start,” while “all these steps is” also has incorrect agreement. Missing or misplaced articles and punctuation make some clauses hard to interpret, particularly in the description of the wells and final stages. The final sentence also lacks a clear grammatical connection between the generator and the claimed finished product. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use passive forms consistently for process descriptions, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well.”
