IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This process diagram illustrates a step by step procedure of creating electricity using the geothermal energy.
Overall, the system initiates from putting the cold water under ground and terminates at the last step which is generator turbine. The geo thermal plant basically processes the hot water into cold water down the earth and generates the electricity outside the earth.
Initially, the cold water is stoked 4.5 km down the earth. Furthermore, there is a drilled injection well through which water encompasses. Water passes from the geothermal zone which has hot rocks. This will convert the cold water into hot water by reaching at the production well.
Subsequentely, the production well pumped the hot water outside the earth, where there is a condenser. It is an apparatus that turns steam into liquid. Ultimately, the steam is transferred to its final step where electricity is produced. It is a generator turbine that will generate the electricity and provide the electricity to the power plants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include its main stages: water enters the injection well, passes through hot rocks, rises through the production well, and is used to generate electricity. However, some important details are unclear or inaccurate. The water is not “stoked 4.5 km down”; rather, cold water is pumped down an injection well that reaches 4.5 km underground. The condenser is also described incorrectly: it releases steam, rather than turning steam into liquid. Your overview says the final step is “generator turbine,” but the turbine and generator are separate stages, and the generator produces electricity. Clarifying these points and summarising the turbine’s role would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, supported by paragraphing and signposts such as “Initially,” “Subsequently,” and “Ultimately.” This makes the process reasonably easy to follow, and the movement from underground stages to surface equipment is apparent. Some connections and references, however, are not fully clear: “This will convert the cold water” does not precisely identify the process, while “its final step” obscures the distinction between the turbine and generator. The overview also repeats the idea of generating electricity without clearly mapping the stages. To strengthen progression, use one paragraph for the overview and organise the details in the exact order shown, with explicit links between each piece of equipment.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” and “condenser,” which helps communicate the subject. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the process harder to understand. For example, “stoked 4.5 km down” does not describe pumping water, and “water encompasses” is not an appropriate way to explain its movement through a well. “Generator turbine” also combines two separate components. There are spelling and form errors in “geo thermal” and “Subsequentely.” Aim for precise process verbs such as “is pumped,” “flows,” “is heated,” and “drives,” and check technical terms and spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “a drilled injection well through which water encompasses” and a clause beginning “where there is a condenser.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical choices reduce clarity. In “the system initiates from putting,” the construction is awkward; “the process begins when…” would be more controlled. Tense and voice are inconsistent in “the production well pumped the hot water,” while “the steam is transferred to its final step where electricity is produced” has an unclear clause relationship. Articles and phrasing also need attention in “the last step which is generator turbine.” Practise consistent present-simple passive forms for process descriptions and check sentence links and articles.
