IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process to use geothermal energy for production of electricity.
Overall, it is evident the process consist on five steps. The Cold water pumped down and the hot water pumped up play a permeative role in production of electricity. Moreover, it starts with cold water and cultimates with generating the electricity.
Moving to details, Cold water pumped down in to the earth in 4.5km depeath and injected into a well. Furthermore, by passing the geothermal zone which consist on hot rocks, it will reach to production well which is constructed opposite side of the injection well. From, the production well, the hot water pumped up towards condenser, in which it converted into steam. The steam flows into turbine area. By using the power of steam the turbine starts to move. In the final step, the steam provide energy to generator. By running the generator the electricity transfered into the tower, which is source to provide electricity for industries and household work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence from cold water being sent underground to electricity generation, and include the important 4.5 km depth and the geothermal zone of hot rocks. The overview also identifies the process as beginning with cold water and ending with electricity. These features make the account relevant and broadly complete. However, the overview’s claim that there are “five steps” is not clearly reconciled with the stages described, and some details are unclear or inaccurate: the generator is driven by the turbine, not directly by steam, and the diagram does not state that the electricity supplies industries and households. To strengthen the response, describe the stages precisely and avoid adding uses that are not shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the process in sequence. The progression from the injection well through the geothermal zone and production well to the turbine and generator is generally easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “From the production well,” and “In the final step.” At times, however, these links feel mechanical or do not clarify the relationship between ideas; “Moreover” adds little to the overview, while “From,” is awkwardly punctuated. Some references, such as “it” in “in which it converted,” are not fully clear. Use simpler transitions where appropriate and connect each stage explicitly to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which helps communicate the stages. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “illustrates” and “Overall.” However, several inaccurate word choices and spelling errors reduce precision: “permeative role” does not express the intended importance, “cultimates” is misspelled, and “tower” is not the correct term for the electricity transmission structure. Phrases such as “turbine area” and “household work” are also imprecise or unnatural. Aim for accurate process collocations and check spelling, especially for key technical terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “the geothermal zone which consist on hot rocks” and a sequence of clauses describing the process. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction remain noticeable. For example, “the process consist” should use a singular verb, and “in which it converted into steam” needs a passive verb form. The sentence “By running the generator the electricity transfered” also lacks the correct passive construction and punctuation. Practise accurate present-simple passives for process descriptions, such as “water is pumped” and “electricity is generated,” while checking subject–verb agreement and article use.
