IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The Diagram Illustrate the how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity
Overall trent The process start form cold water after It have move to different steps after It has end from the electricity
Initially ,The process start from the cold water who move throught the km cold water pumped down Howerver, the injection well is make at this time and it have pass throught the geothermal zone
Following to this the production well has been move throught the hot water pumped up nd at thuis moment condenser was created .
In addition, condenser is produced steam and move from the small wall and at that time all the energy have restore at generator turbine its process alos called powered by turbine and produces electricity and the folw is called powered by steam
In further, at this time electricity was been created
Conclusion that the process of makin electricity was pass throught from different process it has start from the cold fater and enf from the electricity

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad sequence from cold water to electricity and mention several relevant components, including the injection well, geothermal zone, production well, condenser, steam, turbine and generator. However, the account only partially explains how these stages connect, and some descriptions are unclear or inaccurate: for example, “the injection well is make at this time” does not explain that water is pumped down, while “all the energy have restore at generator turbine” misrepresents the turbine-generator relationship. The overview, “The process start form cold water … end from the electricity,” is too vague to summarise the key transformation. To develop the response, state clearly that water is heated underground by hot rocks, pumped back up, converted to steam, and used to drive the turbine and generator. (Eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted.)
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is an attempt to organise the description in stages, using markers such as “Overall,” “Initially,” “Following to this,” and “In addition.” This gives the reader some sense of sequence, and the response broadly follows the process from water input to electricity output. However, progression is weakened by unclear links and repeated conclusions: the opening overview and final sentence both say that the process starts with water and ends with electricity. Several transitions do not show a meaningful relationship, and the long sentence beginning “In addition, condenser…” combines multiple stages without clear boundaries. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and process details, then connect each stage with precise sequencing language and clear references to the water, steam, turbine and generator.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “steam,” “turbine” and “generator,” which helps identify the main equipment. However, the range is limited and many phrases are inaccurate or repetitive, making parts difficult to understand. Examples include “the small wall” for the pipe, “energy have restore” for the generator’s role, and “the folw is called powered by steam.” Spelling and word-form errors such as “trent,” “throught,” “thuis” and “makin” also reduce clarity. Aim for precise process verbs and standard technical collocations, such as water being pumped down, heated, brought to the surface, converted into steam, and used to drive a turbine.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to describe a sequence using both simple statements and longer clauses, but control of sentence structure is inconsistent. Frequent errors in verb forms and agreement appear in phrases such as “The process start,” “it have pass,” and “the production well has been move.” Articles and sentence boundaries are also unreliable, as in “Overall trent The process…” and the extended sentence beginning “In addition, condenser is produced steam…”. These problems sometimes make the intended relationships between stages difficult to follow. Practise forming clear present-simple process sentences, for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well” and “The hot water rises through the production well.” Use full stops to separate stages and check subject–verb agreement and passive forms.
