IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
tye supplied diagram delinates the process through the electricity is generated by geothermar energy. looking at the overall picture, it is evident that this is a combination of both natural and man-made, cyclic process, which consits of three main stages. some of major including the processing of water into geothermal zone, water condensing and production of electricity by the rotation of turbine which is conected with generator.
to begin with, cold water is pumped into the 4.5km of earth depth from the earth surface. then, it is iniection welled through the geothermal zone on the hot rocks. after that, the cold water is converted into hot water by this production well.
on contrast, this water is pumped upward into the condenser. after this process, water is wapored, and its steam is collied by the turbine. by this collision the turbine is started to rotate. by this rotation, the generator is powered and it started to generate electricity. after that, it is suplied to electric towers. finally, we can able to use it for several needs.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to generating electricity, and you correctly include the 4.5 km depth, the hot-rock zone, the production well, turbine and generator. The overview also identifies the process as involving natural and man-made elements. This gives the account a clear, relevant foundation. However, some stages are described imprecisely: the water is heated as it passes through the geothermal zone, rather than being converted by the production well, and the condenser produces steam before it reaches the turbine. The final claim that electricity is supplied to “electric towers” and used for “several needs” is not a central process stage shown. To strengthen the response, explain the key transformations and connections more precisely and keep the overview focused on the complete cycle.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a description of the underground stages and then the surface equipment. Sequencing expressions such as “to begin with,” “then,” and “after that” help the reader follow the process. However, the progression becomes mechanical because several consecutive sentences begin with similar transitions or “by this,” and “on contrast” does not express a contrast between stages. Some references are also unclear, particularly “this water” and “after this process,” as the reader must infer which stage is meant. Grouping the underground heating stages together and then describing the condenser, turbine and generator in a connected sequence would make the organisation smoother and the links between ideas clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” “generator,” and “pumped upward,” so the topic is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “rotation” and “production of electricity.” However, frequent spelling errors and inaccurate word choices reduce precision: “geothermar,” “iniection,” “wapored,” and “collied” make key terms difficult to read, while “the turbine is started to rotate” and “electric towers” are not natural descriptions of the diagram. Some words are repeated, especially “process,” “water,” and “rotation.” Check technical spelling and choose standard process collocations, such as saying that steam drives the turbine and the generator produces electricity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including a relative clause in “the rotation of turbine which is conected with generator” and sequencing clauses beginning with “after.” The overall meaning can usually be followed, but grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “this is a combination … cyclic process” lacks necessary articles, and “some of major including” is an incomplete construction. Verb forms and sentence patterns are also faulty in “it started to generate electricity” and “we can able to use it.” Several sentences rely on repeated “by” constructions rather than varied, controlled structures. Practise complete clause formation, articles, and consistent present-simple descriptions of processes; then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
