IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates.how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
The,Diagram provide enough information regarding electricity production like useage of cold water relevent illustration of cold water getting hot in other side and working as condensor in the coming paragraph i will deeply provide information..
First of all there is cold water that is being dumped 4.5 km beneath the injection well from there on cold water moves underground in geothermal zone consisting of hot rocks in the process on boiling cold water, later in the process hot water reaches production and well facilitate hot water getting pumped in condenser then in condenser hot water become steam and through narrow passage,
After being turned into steam turbine rotates and steam directly powers the rotatory movement of turbine the energy from turbine powers starts generator then the generator directly provides the electricity to transformer completing the whole process from cold water to electricity production.
in conclusion diagram easily teaches us electricity from simple cold water in depth of 4.5km in injection well to making water hot and then charging turbine and generator and producing electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main process, from cold water being sent underground to electricity being generated, and include the important depth of 4.5 km. The sequence through the geothermal zone, production well, condenser, turbine and generator is broadly recognisable. However, the account is only partially complete: the overview is vague, and the opening discussion of “useage of cold water” does not clearly summarise the process. Some details are inaccurate or unsupported: the water is described as “boiling” underground, although the diagram shows it being heated by hot rocks, and a “transformer” is mentioned even though the diagram shows a transmission pylon. Make the overview explicit and report only the stages and outputs shown.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic chronological order, signalled by phrases such as “First of all,” “later in the process” and “After being turned into steam.” This helps the reader follow the broad movement from underground water to electricity. However, the response is divided into paragraphs without a clear, purposeful structure: the second paragraph is an unclear introduction, while the conclusion repeats earlier information rather than adding a concise overview. Several stages are crowded into long sentences, and links such as “from there on” and “in the process” do not always clarify how one stage leads to the next. Organise the response into a brief overview followed by clearly sequenced stages, using precise transitions and sentence boundaries.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “production well,” “condenser,” “turbine” and “generator.” These terms show an attempt to describe the diagram specifically. However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “cold water is being dumped” is unsuitable for water being deliberately sent underground, and “charging turbine” does not clearly describe its operation. There are also errors such as “useage,” “relevent” and “rotatory.” Aim for accurate process collocations and consistent technical terms; for instance, describe water as being pumped down and heated, and say that steam drives the turbine.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts to combine stages in complex sentences, for example, “After being turned into steam turbine rotates,” and uses passive forms such as “is being dumped” and “getting pumped.” However, these structures are often faulty, and sentence boundaries and punctuation are inconsistent. The opening has an unnecessary full stop in “illustrates.how,” while the long sentence beginning “First of all” runs through several stages without clear grammatical separation. Articles and sentence construction are also problematic in phrases such as “reaches production and well” and “powers starts generator.” These errors can make relationships between stages unclear. Use shorter, complete sentences first, then add controlled clauses, checking articles, verb forms and punctuation.
