IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The diagram illustrates the information about how2 geothermal energy is used to produce electricity
In general , the process have several steps to complelet the process and it take almost half month to complete the process
Having a myopic look , in the first step they take cool water in container then the pumped cool water down in earth after that the injection the well the the give the hot rocks though the geothermal zone . In next step the produce well then hot water pumped up direction from underground when the make the condenser and the steam which release the put in turbine in which powered by steam the that powered the put in generator that generator do power by turbine and produces the electricity and then in last step the give that electricity to transformars

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the topic and mention several relevant stages, including cold water being pumped underground, hot water returning to the surface, and steam powering a turbine and generator. However, the account is only a partial description: the overview is vague and includes an unsupported claim that the process takes “almost half month,” which the diagram does not show. The sequence is also difficult to verify in places, and the final reference to “transformars” is inaccurate: the diagram shows electricity being transmitted by power lines to a pylon. The response is 13 words below the required minimum, further limiting the detail provided. To improve, give a clear overview of the water-to-electricity process and accurately describe the key stages without adding information absent from the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the description in process order, using phrases such as “In general,” “in the first step,” and “In next step.” This gives the reader some sense of progression. However, the response has no clear paragraph structure, and most of the stages are crowded into one long sentence. Linking phrases are repetitive or used inaccurately, as in “after that the injection the well the the give the hot rocks,” so the relationships between actions become unclear. The opening overview also does not prepare the reader for the sequence that follows. Separate the overview from the detailed stages, then use short, clearly linked sentences to show how water moves through the plant and how electricity is generated.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps identify the main equipment. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms make the process difficult to understand: “cool water” is less precise than “cold water,” “the produce well” does not name the production well clearly, and “transformars” is both misspelled and not the equipment shown. Phrases such as “having a myopic look” are inappropriate for describing a diagram. Aim for accurate process vocabulary and natural collocations, for example “water is pumped down the injection well” and “steam drives the turbine.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt to describe a sequence and include some connected clauses, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently obscure the intended meaning. For example, “the process have several steps” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, while “it take almost half month” has errors in verb form and article use. The long sentence beginning “Having a myopic look” contains incomplete or poorly connected clauses, making it hard to identify which equipment performs each action. Sentence structures are mostly basic, with little accurate variation. Use the present simple consistently for a process, form passive constructions carefully (“cold water is pumped down”), and check agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
