IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The infographic outline the production of electricity from the Geothermal energy.

Overall, it involves major 5 stages to convert Geothermal energy into Electric energy involving major components are Injection wall, Geothermal zone, Production well, condenser, tubine with generator and transmission line

Firstly, cold water pumps down well below the ground level almost 4.5 kilometers to Geothermal zone where it hits hot rocks. Consequently, the temperature of cold water rises and it becomes hot water prior to entering into condenser where it state changed into the vapour form as Steam. In next stage, steam is bombarded on the turbine blades and rotation of the turbine starts. Eventually generator is coupled with the turbine shaft where mechanical energy transforms into electric energy by EMF induction in the generator. The produced electricity is transmitted throught the high tension lines wherever the demand of electricity arise. The whole cycle operates on the priciple of conversation and transformation of energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover the main sequence from pumping cold water underground to generating and transmitting electricity, and the overview identifies the process as a series of stages. The 4.5-kilometre depth and the heating of water in the geothermal zone are also accurately reported. This gives the response a clear account of the central process. However, some stages are more fully described than others: the injection and production wells are not clearly distinguished as separate parts, and the condenser’s role is described as changing water into steam without explaining that hot water is pumped back to the surface first. The overview also says there are five stages but lists more than five components. A more precise overview and clearer reporting of each labelled stage would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and a chronological description beginning with “Firstly” and continuing through “Consequently,” “In next stage,” and “Eventually.” This makes the process generally easy to follow. The sequence from underground heating to electricity generation is logical, and the final sentence provides a sense of completion. However, the overview is a long, crowded sentence, and the main process is presented in one extended paragraph, so the stages are not visually separated. Some links are mechanical or imprecise, particularly “In next stage,” while “wherever the demand of electricity arise” shifts away from describing the diagram. Use clearer stage-by-stage grouping and more precise references to the wells and equipment to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of process vocabulary, including “Geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine,” “mechanical energy,” and “transmitted,” which helps communicate the technical sequence. There are also attempts at more specialised phrasing, such as “EMF induction.” However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “bombarded on the turbine blades” is not a natural description of steam driving a turbine, and “major 5 stages” is an unnatural phrase. Spelling errors such as “tubine,” “throught,” and “priciple” also reduce accuracy. Prefer standard process language and check technical terms and spelling; for example, describe steam as “driving” or “turning” the turbine rather than “bombarding” its blades.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including a complex sequence with “where” and “Consequently,” and most of the process remains understandable. The main weakness is that some sentences contain errors in agreement, articles, or clause construction. For example, “The infographic outline” needs a singular verb, while “it involves major 5 stages” has an awkward determiner structure. In “where it hits hot rocks,” the pronoun reference is unclear, and “wherever the demand of electricity arise” has a subject–verb agreement error and an unsuitable clause structure. The sentence beginning “Overall” also lacks a clear grammatical relationship between its components. Aim for shorter, controlled sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and the links between clauses.
